I was always under the impression that most GM's have played the game, maybe not all at the NHL level. Yzerman, Doug Wilson, Jim Rutherford, John Davidson, Dale Tallon are some GM's that have experienced success who played well in the NHL. I would think the number of NHL GL's who didn't at least play major junior or college hockey is small.

I have corrected my post to reflect what I had wanted to say. There is a precise reason why I set my focus on former NHL players. Of course, almost all NHL GMs have played elite level or even professional hockey. But less than half of all current GMs ever played more than a handful of games in the NHL.
Like I said: when I hear NHL players talk about the game, or the quality of individual teams I tend to be unimpressed.

Exactly. My point was that "playing the game" does not by fiat translate into skills as an evaluator of the game.

I think he's hilarious, but yeah, few knocks to the head over the years

Yeah they always make so many apologies when they interview a non hockey guy like that but it's almost always a good one. This one was awesome

I feel like you have no idea what you're talking about here.
Through the last 50 years, a large number of GMs have been ex-players - many of them excelling.
The point about learning the trade from competent gm's is not valid, as those non-player GMs would have had to learn the same way. It's true for both.

You feel incorrectly. First of all, he said elite or high level players, like, say Yzerman. Second, no, not that many elite players became top GMs. More were GMs but not very good ones (see Risebrough, Doug).
And second, no, some player-turned GMs (and POHOs) got put in the position way way too early. See Risebrough, Doug (two years as AGM and then right into the big chair, only about 3-4 years after playing).
ETA: Also, the very best ones through history were non players or mediocre players. Torrey, Lou, Fletcher, etc. Now Yzerman and Francis are good GMs and were great players but that’s a pretty new development, and, like I said, they spent some time in the understudy role.

The best thing about Spittin Chiclets is the insight into hockey player culture. And the worst thing about Spittin Chiclets is the insight into hockey player culture.
It is funny and entertaining, but holy cow are the players (including the guests) a bunch of self-obsessed, spoiled, knuckleheads. I like the hockey talk, but I really don’t need to hear about the latest New York party or another Biz conquest.

The point is that there is little correlation between how good a player was and how good they were as a GM. Which is very different than saying good players don’t make good GM’s.
And the notion of non players being GM's is still very rare. You don't have to be an NHLer to be an elite hockey player. Lou Lamoriello I believe was an accomplished college hockey player, a level few ever compete at.

They’re a players podcast that rely on players wanting to come on the show for free for up to hour long interviews. Very very rarely do they rip on teams or players. It would kill their show. If your listening to that show for team analysis I think you’d be subscribing to the wrong podcast LOL it’s more of a what’s behind the curtains with the players where you hear them being themselves and not in the typical packaged media interviews.

I agree, I started listening to my first one that he Lucic on it a while back and had to turn it off after the way he was telling stories about picking up women.

I always think Whitney sounds dumb. But that might be his accent. Biz played under Tippet, so he is very familiar with him, and only has great things to say about Tippet. His Oiler turnaround take is pretty much based all on Tippet.

Maybe I miss it because it doesn't bug me, but I don't think he's shared any of those stories lately. I think when he came to Stampede was the last time
