I think someone earlier posted a chart with every teams taxes. If you live in Tampa, an nhl players total tax rate was 37%. If you live in Alberta it’s 38%. Imo, it should be less then Points deal.

Not even close to worse case scenario. I’d be willing to bet a lot that Tkachuk won’t be taking his QO and running off to UFA.

Tag team operation, @TSNBobMcKenzie and @DarrenDreger reporting that #Flames are closing in on three-year deal with RFA Matthew Tkachuk worth around $7 million AAV.

Tkachuk ends up with a higher AAV than Point, but $1.02m less overall in his pocket over term of deal with taxes.

So, ~330K lower than Point per season, which seems pretty bang on.

Reality of varying tax rates across the league. We pay more to pay the player less.

Yeah he shouldn’t have gotten more than Point but Flames wanted him in camp so they overpaid to get it done now.

Glad to see it done. The AAV is higher than I wanted to see for that term. I like the term, though. I've always thought it bizarre how teams over-commit to long contracts. I like the Tampa Bay model. Forces players to stay sharp and team-focused.

Tkachuk also spends 6 months a year in Canada where his $ stretches further than it would in the states.

I don’t see this as a tax thing. This is what it took to get the deal done now and Treliving probably gave in as opposed to grinding another $250k off the aav

Or. He takes the QO, and walks after 4 years.
Or he goes to arb, and is awarded a 1yr deal

He can be out in 4 years. I re-iterate: Worst case scenario with this contract.

This puts a ton of pressure on Treliving in a couple of summers when Gaudreau and Tkachuk can sign extensions. Johnny could walk and Tkachuk can take the team to arb and then walk in year 4. With Gio’s money coming off the books he may have the ability to sign both players if they want to stay.

Glad it's done - key piece.

Don't love the deal as I was hoping they could sign something long-term. Also think the AAV is too high for a 3 year bridge contract.

Having said that, it does fit with the cap and the silver lining is Treliving is not forced to make a trade. This team is better with Frolik and/or Brodie on the roster.

Overall it's ok for me.

I guess we’ll find out once his contract is up. Treliving is smart enough to get a good read on the situation, if he can’t sign him, he’ll trade him in that final year.
