Who would go on a Flames ring of honour?
Forever a Flame is dumb, yeah. There shouldn't be two tiers of banners hanging in the Dome. But I think it could very easily be fixed by creating a ring of honour in the new arena.
Leave Iginla, Vernon, and McDonald retired, obviously. Maybe add the existing FaF banners to that stash, especially MacInnis' if the Flames aren't gonna give out #2 anyway. But who would go on a ring of honour?
A ring of honour format would be able to commemorate a vast array of players, including players who may not have played for Calgary during a long period of time but who made substantial contributions on and off the ice. It would also allow the Flames to commemorate players for more than their numbers (while still keeping that aspect of the honour).
Yes, I know the Canucks do this. But I honestly don't think it's a bad idea. And before anyone says "so basically, you're saying they just keep the current system but just move the FaF banners to a ring around the stands?" Well, yes, but a ring of honour would allow the Flames to commemorate a bunch of players without filling the roof of the building with a Canadiens-level number of banners.
This could be a thing done once or twice a year, constantly filling the new arena with reminders of the greats who once graced the ice of the old arena.
What are your thoughts on these Ring of Honour candidates?
- 28, Robyn Regehr
- 23, Martin Gelinas
- 39, Doug Gilmour
- 18, Matt Stajan
- 24, Jim Peplinski
- 22, Craig Conroy
- 7, Joe Mullen
- 20, Gary Suter
- 4, Brad McCrimmon
- 12, Hakan Loob
- 14, Kent Nilsson?
Looking for further input/inspiration here from fans older than I am. I didn't include Kiprusoff because I think his number should be retired (as should Giordano's, when he's done). And I have no idea what to do with Fleury and I don't think anyone else does either (including the organization).
I resisted adding guys like Tanguay, Cammalleri, and Glencross, mainly because they aren't close to the iconic impacts the listed guys had. But I could maaaaybe see room for guys like them if the team wanted representation from the newer teams, too.

That's another terrific idea, I'd love to see guys like Cliff and Peter and maybe even Darryl Sutter honoured on the ring

Gary Roberts?
This actually is a question, how come Roberts' name has never been mentioned in any FaF or RoH type of discussion at all? He was a pretty good point producer and had played like 10 years for the Flames. Did he burn any bridges or piss some higher-ups?

TBH our Ring of Honour should be Forever a Flame. Too many tiers if you ask me. Three? Nada.
Just make Forever a Flame the team's 'ring of honour' system and call it a day. Put 25 and 2 with 9, 30, and 12.

Yeah... Matt Stajan was a character guy, but he in no way shape or form should be there. What makes him more worthy than a guy like Yelle?
Iggy
Vernon
McDonald
Macinnis
Nieuwendyk
Fleury
Kipper
Roberts
Regehr
Suter
Mullen
Loob
Peplinski
Gilmour
Conroy
Gelinas
Maher
Fletcher
Crisp

I'm not sold on having multiple layers of honouring players. One is enough.

The Stampeders have had a Wall of Fame for over 30 years and have honoured 32 players and 11 builders over the years. They also have 7 retired numbers.
I have no problem with the Flames doing something similar. I think there are plenty of players who have done enough to deserve some sort of honour by the team, but not so far as a retirement.
I'd put Regehr and Peplinski at the top of my list. Kipper and Fleury too, but they probably deserve retirement.
Cliff Fletcher just turned 84. It would be nice if the team could do something to honour him while he's still in good health.

How about absolutely nothing except retiring jerseys, which should only be:
Lanny
Vernon
Iginla
Theo
Kipper

I recently visited the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame they have at their park. It’s extremely well done. I think the Flames should do something along those lines, obviously on a smaller scale.
