After the Lucic trade yesterday I couldn't think of a better time to start the 2021 expansion draft thread (lol)

So lets see everyone's list. I'll start.

Obviously we have big bad Milan Lucic as our #1 protected forward due to his no movement clause and the fact that we have to protect him due to that clause. If he's not on your list then your list is wrong. It's already been confirmed that the Flames will be honoring his NMC. Speculating that he will waive to go to Seattle is just that, speculation. So I'll include him on my list.

I'll go the 7 forwards 3 defenceman and 1 goalie route.

Forwards:
Lucic (NMC)
Tkachuk
Monahan
Gaudreau
Lindholm
Bennett
Backlund (NTC)

Defence:
Gio (NTC)
Hanafin
Valimaki

Goalie:
Rittich (probably)

I might switch Andersson for Hanafin but we'll see how the next couple years go.

the 4 and 4 and 1 goalie looks even worse to be honest

I would have thought the best time to do the 2021 expansion draft list would have been 2021, but that's just me.

I just saw so many posters who were unaware of the implications of the Lucic trade.

Hopefully this thread can make them more aware of the implications.

NTC do not have to be protected, only NMC.

Lots can happen in two years. I'm not worried about this trade and the expansion draft.

I understand you're projecting what might occur by 2021, but protecting Dube over Backlund seems very unlikely at this point.

(Side note, will Dube even need to be protected? What's the minimum experience needed to be eligible?)

Why does anyone think that Lucic will have to be protected because he has a NMC? Pretty much everyone of consequence with a NMC last expansion draft waived it.

Can someone explain to me why we still think Lucic has NMC status when expansion draft happens.

It is listed clear as day that it converts to NTC on June 1, 2021 the same month the expansion draft takes place.

NMC players must be protected. NTC do not.

Is Capfriendly incorrect that it is a NTC at that time?

I suspect both Gio and Backlund will not be protected, I also believe Lucic will waive for the good of the team knowing he wouldn't be selected anyway.

Ladd and Spezza are pretty much the only other ones who potentially could have been left off (in my opinion). But then I'm not even sure if either were asked to waive (I know Phaneuf was and declined to).

If Kylington develops a 4/4 might make sense assuming Lucic waives

Andersson, Valimaki, Kylington, Hanifn

You lose Bennet, Backlund or Dube instead of Kylington. Doesn’t work if Lucic doesn’t waive.

He will have a NTC and NMC so he can't be demoted to AHL which a NTC doesn't cover. I have no doubt in my mind that he would waive his NMC when it comes time though.

He still has a MNC during his last years.

That's a clear as day too.

Is capfriendly wrong? This article says he would need to waive his NMC for the expansion draft

Lucic should just come out and say he will waive for the expansion draft. Create instant goodwill amongst the fans. Start the relationship off on a positive note.

Seattle isn’t going to claim him
