Most likely scenario is both guys continue to struggle but I don't mind the gamble. MAYBE Lucic can get reinvigorated playing on a team that isn't atrocious. MAYBE if he can't produce he can at least bring a little toughness. I don't have any expectations really but I don't think Neal was going to do much here either.

Treliving really dropped the ball here by missing out on Ferland. Lucic was better than Neal last year but ideally neither is in your lineup.

You’ve said this numerous times. Why would ownership write such a massive cheque...they’re rich, but not rich enough that they can just throw 23 million bucks.

What I know is this. I was resigned to the fact that Neal was on our roster this year, had made my peace with that, so I'm not necessarily happy that he's gone.

But I have spent three years making fun of Edmonton for the Lucic contract, and now it's ours. It's like you've not only taken away my favorite toy, but your hitting me over the head with it too.

That’s not how buyouts work. It’s not one massive check

I also think they are smart enough businessmen to wrap their head around first year Econ concepts like “sunk costs” and “time value of money” to realize you save money buying out bad contacts. They have been buying out a ton lately.

Neal buyout and Ferland signing costs them identical dollars this season to just paying Neal, and they would get the better player. It’s a part of Treliving’s job to be able to sell ownership on good ideas

Tkachuk and Bennett were just given a "hall pass". I'd love to see Bennett centre Tkachuk and Lucic.

Plus I am forever in debt with gratitude to any member of the 2011 Bruins. I have no problem with Lucic or Marchand. Players you love to hate.

If Lucic puts up 30 points and is a physical presence and adds an inch or two to every player on this roster, he still brings more value than Neal putting up 20 goals and 45 points.

So last year at some point was Treliving thinking, you know, this team is great and all, but what it really needs is an infusion from Oilers. It needs Talbot and Lucic.
