Who knew trading a fourth liner for a fourth liner would be so upsetting.
At least with Neal you've got a guy who is hopefully primed for a bit of a bounceback season. I do take solace in the fact that Neal couldn't keep up with Gaudreau and Monahan, so good luck with McDavid. Meanwhile, I guess Lucic can still be a facepuncher which is something we don't have...

I would think that being from Vancouver Lucic would probably waive his NMC for the Seattle expansion draft

A team that finished 2nd in the NHL last season, incredible contract negotiations, solid scouting/drafting record.

Serious question: Could each team retain salary on their player in a trade? That would be a good move to lure seattle into a pick on either of these guys, or to make both pieces more tradeable in the future? It could also essentially balance the value on both players, and the team essentially gets a mini-buyout on their cap for the contract number of years, rather then x2 the years?

This one, this specific trade as it stands is a very large black mark on Tree for me. Means nothing in the grand scheme of things but the foundation of my faith in our GM just took a major seismic shock and is now crumbling.

I wouldn't hold any bad feelings if Lucic chose to exercise his NMC and nix this trade to Calgary like Kadri did.

Both four, same term. Likely smaller cap-hit for Lucic. Both should be eating popcorn in the pressbox with the Flames, so it's a win especially if they get a pick.

A trade for bottom six forwards and the Flames get cap relief and a pick, I’m down for, but still a little worried about expansion draft

I don't like this. I thought Lucic was under contract for two more years - it's four.
This is a whole heap of why bother. Buy James Neal out - 8 years of $1.5M in dead money on a cap that's going to be over $90M in five sucks, but it doesn't suck as much as Milan Lucic.

Who we now can't even buy out to regain cap because his bonuses are so ####ed.

I don't like it. I'm willing to be wrong. I don't think I am. Some of this depends on retention - Lucic @ 50% is livable.

10% retention is only a savings of 600k - I'd rather have Neal.

What is the likelihood that Lucic's spinal condition becomes career-ending shockingly quickly after being diagnosed by comptent (Non-Edmontonian) Doctors?
That would be quite the M. Night Shyamalanian twist...

Well, people here were also surprised at what some thought was a lacklustre trade in Hamilton to Carolina. Tre has proven us wrong in the past. Who's to say that Lucic won't also return to a reasonable contributor along with his face punching prowess outside of the suckhole to the north.

The thing for Lucic should be to know that there is no way he will be selected in the expansion draft anyway. Whether he waives or not, the result will be the same for him.

Waiving, however, does a favour for the team he plays for.

Hopefully both parties realize this.
