I don’t get the hate for him at all. Last year was his second year in the NHL. Everybody knew he was going to be a project. He improved from 25 pts to 32. No pp time and a solid penalty killer. Hoping he can hit 40 pts this year.

I think it's because he has all these attributes that could make him an absolute beast, but he doesn't really live up to that promise.
6'4 212 but he doesn't effectively use that size like he could.
I think he's still got some potential to be more than he's shown so far, but I don't think he'll ever use his size like Jagr.

Jankowski proved to be a valuable PKer this past season but he brings absolutely no value 5v5 aside from his shot

Maybe Janko would better serve as a RW if we can acquire a good 2/3 center. I actually couldn't understand just how much he could disappear with the tools he puts on display on the PK while being pressured and outnumbered. I think the key ingredient missing is just intensity.

Absolutely, but I wouldn’t right him off yet. That can come with confidence. He is obviously very confident on the pk. Now he just needs it to translate to 5 vs 5.

Bill Peters wants Ryan on the team he's coaching for that very reason.

How Backlund continues to suck at faceoffs even at his age is beyond me

It's just so weird to see a player so confident on the PK yet so meek 5 on 5. Jankowski on the PK is a beast. Jankowski 5 on 5 is Joe Colbourn.

ROR had less than that, I just want the kid to show up and bring more intensity 5v5.

My only issue with Janko is he will score highlight reel goals or make incredible puck handling plays for assists then vanish for a long time. Then look like he's incapable of doing anything at all, then boom, another one. Highlight reel.
I suppose it's a positive in a sense because that high level skill IS there, hes just gotta learn to use it more and not become a Joe.

TBF, he faces off against the best centres more often than anyone else, I suspect. That said, most defensive centres are over 50% and it's part of the job.

He reminds me of a 23-25 year old Backlund. Similar numbers, Janko obviously better on the dot, Janko likely better on the PK at the same age, Janko worse 5 on 5.

He faces off against the best "offensive" centres, who are not necessarily skilled face off men.

That's why they should try him on the wing.
PK Units are well planned, every move is largely choreographed. Playing center five on five is read and react, and I don't think he has that skill in spades.

His PK skills really show up in his ability to create offense which IMO is about reacting and being able to create offense off the rush. In his own zone I’m not really sure he’s much better than any other PKer. He just doesn’t handle traffic well and having to get through people.
Now maybe I’m wrong because Peters never uses him 3on3 IIRC.
I don’t believe Peters is a huge fan as when Neal was scratched for game 5, I inferred from his comets that the other candidate(s) for scratching had special teams responsibilities and thought it was pretty clear he was talking about Janko.
IMO Janko and Czarnik are two guys that have a lot to prove to the coach this training camp.

Agee’s. Try Dube as his centre.
