He could end up in the 5-6 range, depending on what you think Rittich gets.
That would be quite good

$7.0 m would be quite bad, I think. The cost should be considerably less than that.

yup. I like Rittich, but he definitely isn't a 4.5m goalie (yet).
If 2.5m for Talbot is correct, the combined cap hit should come in at 5.5-6m IMO.

I am ok with it. Given that I was pumped for Brian Elliott, and wanted to trade Smith at the deadline. Who knows with goalies.
Good luck to Smith. By all accounts he was a good guy, but I think we need to move on from a streaky goalie. He also seemed to be emotional like Elliott. Prone to pouting and suddenly getting injured.
BSD and Talbot seem to be more cool and collected. Who knows what that will result in but given all options Treliving does the prudent course of action. Totally respect that but it hasn’t totally worked for him yet.

I like this. Talbot playing behind a team that has an NHL roster and a defensive system will, IMO, be a bargain at $2.5 mil.

I think we're looking at a combined $6 million for the two. And neither deal longer than 2 years.
If Rittich signs a DeSmith contract I'm sending TC a fruitcake for Christmas.

I am happy with this and prefer it to bringing Smith back with the same money and term

I never said he would sign the DeSmith contract. I have always maintained that this was the deal the Flames would be negotiating off of, and that Rittich's number will likely come in @ $2.5–3.0 m for two or three years. That is a substantial increase on what DeSmith makes, but it is the most closely comparable deal until Jordan Binnington re-signs.
...and I hate fruitcake. You are a monster.

If you're saying he could get $3 by 3 I wouldn't say you are using DeSmith as a comparison. That is almost triple.
Looks like you are safe from the fruitcake

I was hoping that the Flames were going to pick up a goalie that is at least above the league average.

Do you have one in mind other than the one who's going to get paid way more than we can afford?
Unless we're making a trade, it's slim pickings. And even in the trade market there's not much seemingly out there

I think Anders Nilsson is a fair comparison for Rittich.

This is the point. Flames really have no choice but to take a gamble with their goaltending, at least for this year.

I know what you mean and I agree.
However, I am getting a little annoyed with the piss poor planning by the GM and his team for this off-season. Mainly due to unappealing contracts and buyouts (Neal, Frolik, Brouwer, Stone). I know that other teams are also in this spot but the Flames got dominated in the first round of the playoffs... not sure why we are so locked in with the existing core and they better do something in the playoffs next season
I mean.. there is no money to spend on an average goalie (around $5 MIL).. that is a bit ridiculous.
I know I am in the minority but paying Backlund almost 6 million is an overpayment because he is a 3rd line guy who can play defense. Tkachuk is really the biggest reason Backlund and Frolik have shown offense in the past few seasons. I would happily take an offensive 2nd line center and have Ryan play on the third line... with no Backlund

Flames side: DeSmith $1.25x3
Meet in the middle: $2.875 x 2/3
Rittich side: Koskinen $4.5x3
