I wish him all the best. I completely changed my tune on him after he came back to Florida. I think he's a man of the highest character, despite the fact that he played for the Canucks.

Roberto Luongo is indeed retiring with three years remaining on his contract, as opposed to going on LTIR. There will be cap recapture penalties for both #FlaPanthers and #canucks as a result.

			$1 million is tolerable. There was always risk for the Panthers in trading for Luongo, but he lasted a lot longer than I figured at a very high level. Pretty smart trade for Florida in hindsight.

			I gather this will impact Nashville when Webber retires, to much greater extant though.

			Surprising. I would have thought the Panthers would look to put him on LTIR for being old.

Actually, no.

A player cannot retire and simultaneously be put on LTIR. If this was the plan then Luongo would never have publicly announced his retirement, which requires him to sign paperwork with the League./

			How many players are left that played in the 90's?
 Thornton, Marleau, maybe Matt Cullen, anyone else?

			Luongo is giving up 3.68 million by retiring instead of going on LTIR for the remainder of the contract.

 It should be noted that the way his mega contract was structured, this or next season was likely the season he planned to retire anyways

 Bob McKenzie
 @TSNBobMcKenzie
 FLA actually prefers taking the cap recapture penalty to Luongo going on LTIR, which can be a useful salary cap management tool but also comes with some hassles as well. So retirement it is.

The Panthers probably want the $1M on their books or dont care either way whereas the Canucks are basically ghosting a $3M player.

And that being said, it doesnt sound like he'd even qualify. He doesnt have a career ending injury, the NHL would never approve it.

			So why - other than a skin condition whose severity is inversely proportional to salary - would LTIR be an option for Luongo in the first place?
