I'm enjoying the series simply because I hate Boston and St. Louis has a great "2017 Nashville" vibe to it. Seeing a non-traditional hockey market going crazy for the Blues is fantastic.

Well considering their winters don't get anywhere near cold enough for outdoor hockey, I'd call them a non-traditional market. Similar climate to Nashville in terms of winter sports (lack thereof). Sure the Blues have been around for ages, but this isn't a town that has a long history itself with the sport.
Or maybe its been their continued mediocre-at-best performances since the Hull days that gives it that feel.

This qualifier eliminates 3/4 of all NHL teams, including Vancouver which had teams competing for and winning Stanley Cups before there was even an NHL. Non-traditional, indeed.

So O'Reilly scores 42 seconds into the game and gets the go-ahead goal in the third to tie the series up 2-2 and now leads his team in points.
Somebody needs to remind the Blues that they can't win with a loser like that on their team. Or at least that's what people were saying about him because of Buffalo and Colorado being terrible teams with him despite just being terrible teams.

Yeah I will never understand this line of thinking.
Players are part of the team. Some teams are better than others. That does not detract, nor elevate, the play of individual players.
ROR, win or lose, is a tremendous hockey player. Always has been.

O'Reilly kind of went from mess to mess going from Colorado to Buffalo. You have to admit when the Blues were last place in January there almost looked like some sort of curse going on with this guy. Similar to Matt Duchene going from Colorado to Ottawa although his leadership was questioned in both markets. Not every good player can be a great leader and it's typical that bad teams can have a lack of leadership compared to good teams so a guy like O'Reilly on a good team with veteran leadership in place can just do his thing in winning faceoffs and play a good two way game.

You gotta admit that the narrative was delicious and easy to follow though. Loser bouncing around on loser teams, bringing gloom anywhere he goes, especially with his history with the DUI and everything. Good for O'Reilly to finally bust straight through that wall. He's a great player, and I can't imagine how good it must feel for him to finally be able to focus on that.

I like seeing records broken, so I am hoping Binnington can beat the rookie goalie playoff wins record.

I was checking Binnington's stats (which are absolutely amazing for a young goalie btw) and then re-looked into 2011 NHL Draft. He went 88th in the 3rd round. Feaster picked Sven Baertschi in the 1st and Marcus Granlund in the 2nd... We could have had both Kucherov (58th) and Binnington (88th). Coulda, shoulda, woulda... Really sucks to look at our past draft records. Rarely, if ever, Calgary has made a killing at a draft.
To be fair, Feaster got Johnny in the fourth...

I think goalies are absolutely the biggest reason it's hard to look back in drafts. You also have to imagine what fans here would be saying about a draft pick who is not in the NHL 7 years later (other than 13 minutes in 15-16). It might give some people pause about making early judgments on Parsons (and even Gillies, who was drafted a year after Binnington). Binnington's minor league numbers are of course overall better, TBF.

Yep. Don't forget Matt Murray going 83rd in 2012...

You didn't even need to draft him then. He could have likely been acquired for a 6th rounder last summer (or less). At the season ticket holder session Tre said that the Blues were looking for a place for him to play outside their organization only a year ago. They had basically given up on him, and now a year later they might win the cup in large part because of him.

Calgary should have offer-sheeted him as an RFA.

off topic, but when I was looking up Chara stats, I noticed Patrick Marleau is 5th all time in regular season NHL games played.
If he plays all of next season, he'd be only 30 games away.
it surprised me he was that high up and kind of slid under the radar. wonder if he goes for it.
Part of me would be sad if he beat Howe as I would hope for someone with more stature, for lack of a better word.
wonder what the top 20 list would look like if you add in WHA, KHL (for Jagr) and playoff games for those leagues.

I know it's been said before, but I guess it's best to just keep picking goalies in later rounds instead of early, and wait until one works out.

He's only 1 and a quarter seasons away. It's pretty amazing but he's never missed more than 8 games in a season, and that was in his rookie year. He's played the full season for the last 10 years. Averaging over 18:00 per game.
