I believe famous Flames examples include Irving and Pelech! 
here's hoping for Kuznetzov, Theodore, Perron, Schneider etc

Pretty sure we got Backlund in that range too.
Top 2 guys for me as Brett Leason and Egor Afanaseyev. 2 big boomers.

Sounds like he's improved his skating and is considered a 1st round player, but after Hunter Smith that still scares me a lot. He put up good numbers against kids.

Think of Leason as a RW version of Rasmus Andersson. Needs to commit to pro athlete training (which he so far has to improve his skating that much). If someone doesnt take him between 20 and the Flames puck, hed be a real gem IMO. And I feel we wont have to wait as long for him to fill a full time roster slot.
Smith never improved anything. He just didnt or couldn't, but Leason has shown so far he can. It's a very black and white thing for me. If he commits to the training like a pro athlete, hes a mark stone.

Backlund was 24th IIRC. Nice pick. Maybe Sutter's best.

Fair enough. Although a late pick like that was probably all about the scouts and not Sutter.

Exactly, if credit given to Sutter on that pick, how about blame on the one he drafted Tim Ramholt when Shea Weber was still on the board?

Ramholt was tracking to be an NHLer, and probably a good one, until he decided to go back to Europe when he was like 20 or something.
Some things you can't scout for, or are at least far harder.

Also, by drafting The Dion, they likely did not want to draft two seemingly similar players by getting Weber as well...
Revisionist history, but man could 2003 draft have shaped things differently...
Carter or Getzlaf and Weber? Yes, please...
Then again, it could have been Hugh Jessiman and Cory Urquhart or Petr Vrana...

Hopefully Cole Caufield is available mid-round and the Flames trade up to get him.
Crazy production but underrated due to size. Alex Debrincat like is my guess.

I believe the biggest knock on Colefield , more so than his
lack of size , is his very average speed . His vision, stick skills and hands are excellent.

Just draft whichever player has the most skill/highest ceiling. Speed might be nice as well.
Size and physicality should just be possible bonuses IMO.
The Flames are good at developing small players. They always have been.
Do they help you win in the playoffs. Debatable, but the Flames should be looking for value.
I'm also not opposed to the Flames trading away the 1st with Brodie and Frolik to get something nice. Treliving tends to make his best moves at the draft, so if there's a blockbuster trade, I won't complain.

That's a bold statement...if this over ager that has only started playing well against 16 and 17 year olds after he turned 19 commits to training...he is (not may be) the next Mark Stone...a selke caliber top line right winger...I think some tempering of expectations for the draft is once again required...
