Can't believe he's just thinking of this now . He's coached him for several years now. The guy is great on face offs and worked the hardest of the three on top line this series but he didn't get a look in the middle to at least share time with Backlund in trying to check MacKinnon? It is nice to see him recognize what might be a good option for the team going forward even if it is about a game and a half too late.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Neal (playmaker and two-way forward to hopefully get Neal scoring again)
Tkachuk - Backlund - Frolik (3M way not be around next year but is a good line)
Bennett - Monahan - Ryan (still has RHS faceoff man and decent puck carriers with Monahan)
Mangiapane - Jankowski - Hathaway (if re-signed, otherwise Czarnik)
I think Tre will look at using Brodie/Frolik/Jankowski to get a top 6 RW or dabble in FA again for one (Hayes?, Nyquist?, Zucarello?).

Can’t Lindholm do that?

they didn't trade for lindholm and sign him to a long term deal at 4.9 just to play him 13 minutes a night coming off a 75 point season.

If the Flames had other players willing to take that kind of abuse maybe they would've won more games and maybe monahan wouldn't have to take so much of it.
Agree he needs to work on his skating though, it's easily his worst physical attribute and is what prevents him from being able to play a 200ft game.
My biggest takeaway from that Peters interview is that I think Backlund is gone. He was absolutely horrific in the post season, and if lindholm is going to be playing centre, it's not going to be on line 1.
|
If his body is always broken, he is no less useless to us, no? He might be as heroic as the black knight from Monty Python, but if he disappears halfway through every season (regardless of the reason)... At least if he could skate and play hard on the back check, he would still contribute.

Your take that he disappears halfway through every season is simply false. He, Johnny, and Hudler carries this team to the playoffs when Gio went down in 2015. Just this year and last year he struggled and last year was 4 surgeries

if the organization had any other options they would play someone else in that spot if monahan is hurt, but part of the reason he gets hurt is, again, there are no other options. He has to play beecause monahan in the lineup is better than no monahan in the lineup, even if he's playing at 30%.
This is the same organization that didn't shut him down until it was a foregone conclusion they would be missing the playoffs. He needed 4 surgeries, but they thought he'd still be more effective in the lineup that playing with janko or backlund moving up a line.

Extra points to him for saying you can big and fast.
Most people seem to think it’s one or the other, but you can absolutely be big and fast. i.e. Chris Kreider and Josh Anderson off the top of my head.

But they did play fast and with pace during the regular season.
Peters system worked, the players just didn't execute in the playoffs.

Can't quote for some reason but Flash I was saying Backlund would be pushed down to the third line.
Jankowski is such an odd player, great on the PK and looks like he should be great 5v5 and then is just flat.

That's more likely, sorry if I misinterpreted.
Again though, I don't know if you pay backlund 5.5 million to play 13 minutes a night on the third line.
Tkachuk - Lindholm is IMO a much better pair than Tkachuk backlund though.

It's kind of funny, the furthest this core has made it is without Giordano in the playoffs.

I didn’t get that feeling at all. Backlund is the team’s best overall center. Really surprised you can have this take on Backlund and yet praise Monahan who at times looked like the worst skater on the team post all star break.
You said it yourself he has trouble playing a 200 foot game because of his skating. Personally I think it’s actually his awareness a lot of times that gets him into trouble when he’s puck watching.
Backlund at the very least, holds his own against the top players in the game and when he and his line have a good night, it almost always results in a win because that means his line is shutting down the opposition’s top lines while scoring at the same time. That’s why it’s usually him that’s entrusted to match up against the Mackinnon’s, Crosby’s, McDavid’s and etc. It would be a colossal mistake to move him.

Oh, I agree there. Why did he play down the stretch this year if he was hurt? He produced basically nothing and doesn't play D, so he was just a decoy? I would think that we would have been further along resting Monahan for a month and playing Dube (or whatever)...

We can skate it on the cap. Just make Backlund your shutdown guy and keep him for the PK.
If we could get some good value for Backlund I would be all for it but would have to faith that Lindholm would be just as good as Backs and get a good RW.

I like Lindholm but is he #1C? He and Johnny make for a small/light combination.

backlund was on the ice for 3 of the 4 GWG in the playoffs this year.
3 of 4.
He also had two overtime opportunities to end the game that he couldn't finish on.
It's the most under-talked about storyline of the year IMO.

Tre just spoke the truth there.
"We got beat". Could have easily been a sweep if not for a Herculean Smith performance in game 1.
Little different than Peters response.

Treliving says Monahan was playing through a cracked thumb and Rittich's injury was knee.
Lindholm had a slight knee sprain in the last game.
