In 20 career Playoff games, Gaudreau has 2 goals + 2 assists for 4 points 5v5.
In 20 career Playoff games, Monahan has 3 goals + 0 assists for 3 points 5v5.
That is like... really, really, really bad.
Oof.

The only way I’ll fell better about this is if the Avs lose in the cup final. Preferably to Columbus or NYI. Except the leafs, then the Avs can win.

But does he pot maybe 3 and boost Gaudreau's output a little by giving him more space out there, and in the process helping them seal games 2 and 4?
Could see it.

I think the Avs might be better than we are giving credit for though...I will be interested to see how the next series goes

Honestly, Bennett did work tonight in Gaudreau having his best game of the series. Bennett physical presence and willingness to carry the puck in him did lead to Gaudreau getting some opportunities.
Next season Bennett needs to be given a real fair chance to be a top 6 player. Let him play with players that aren't anchors, and see if it leads to productivity or not. I feel Bennett and Gaudreau would compliment each other well.

Not really sad or surprised. This is the normal course of affairs for the Flames in the playoffs. Nothing new.
The Flames franchise has been a failure in the playoffs for the last 30 years outside of a miraculous 2004 run. I don’t expect any different if the core remains the same next year. Same mentally weak players, same pathetic playoff results.

Hats off to the Flames for their creativity...I really didn’t see them losing in 5 with Mike Smith being the team’s series MVP coming at all. Some solid subterfuge from the writer’s room.
Also (and I don’t think this is the annoyance or liquor talking), I hope this was Monahan’s last game as a Flame. Just zero compete level when the going gets tough.

Avalanche 5 - Flames 1 | Season Over

If you trade Gaudreau (and I think they should consider it), well, maybe it's time they get a crack at the lottery. It's not exactly something to sniff at. Literally every other team who's been around for more than two years has participated in the lottery! The Flames have never had the opportunity to select from that high-end pool of upper-echelon, top-of-the-board talent. They've always had to count on the underdogs coming through.
Not that I'm advocating for tanking as a first choice. I think they can give Gaudreau another crack at it. But if they trade him, it shouldn't be necessarily to tank. Just get another star who cares. Get another centre. Play Tkachuk on the first line with this dynamic centre and Lindholm on the right side.
Tkachuk - star centre acquired for JG - Lindholm
Bennett - Monahan - new right winger (Mangiapane?)
|
You’d trade Johnny Gaudreau but would keep Monahan? Without Gaudreau feeding him tap ins, he’d never sniff 30 goals again. Monahan plays a very lazy game, possibly because he’s so use to Gaudreau getting him the puck, but he doesn’t do much outside of shooting.
Not a lot of playmaking ability, poor defender, slow on the back check, soft on puck battles. Watching Monahan struggle the last 3 months while watching other playoff series where other teams’ #1 centers have dominated tells me a lot about the #1 center we have.

We'll never know what he could have done. He could have easily #### the bed like the rest of the team.

Monahan had 22 goals as a rookie playing on a low-pressure line with Joe Colborne and Mike Cammalleri. Remember?
Put him on a sheltered line behind a true #1 line with Tkachuk and a real #1C. I think it'd make a world of difference.

What makes this even more hard to swallow was listening to Cassie Captain-Obvious's accompanying drivel for 5 consecutive games.
Got to be Monahan's last game as a Flame. No fight, no desire to win, no intimidation -The Lady Bing trophy would look nice next to his pot pourri and scented candles.

When Vegas was sputtering early in game one vs the Sharks, Stone took the team on his back and scored to start the momentum going the other way, and had a huge hand in keeping it going.
Stone has different DNA than a number of guys on this team. I think he would make a difference. Enough to see this be a 6 or 7 game series with half the roster dragging their feet.

Monahan as a 2C
Backlund as a 3C
Makes the most sense
