Playoffs? Yup, NCAA Playoffs are underway.

----------

MSU's season ended last weekend after losing in two straight shutout games to Notre Dame. Mattson didn't play in either game and finished his freshman year with no games played since February 2 and only 14 of 36 games played overall. Mattson will enter his sophomore season still looking for his first college point.

----------

Denver swept North Dakota this weekend and advanced to the NCHC semifinals against Minnesota-Duluth next weekend. Pettersen had one assist in Saturday's game. Regardless of what happens next week, the Pioneers are locks to make the NCAA tournament, which starts the following week.

----------

ASU is still waiting patiently to find out where they'll play their first NCAA tournament game. All signs point to the Sun Devils being locks for an invite to the tournament at this point, so it's just a matter of waiting to see which regional they'll be playing in. I believe the brackets will be announced next Sunday.

----------

As for the Adam Fox signing watch ... Harvard has survived to play another week. Harvard scored 7 goals this weekend and Fox had 6 points. He's doing everything he can to extend his college career. Right now, Harvard has a 93% chance of making the tournament. Of course, with Carolina's recent play, they'll likely still be playing even if Harvard goes all the way to the Frozen Four.

Martin Pospisil returned from suspension and had an assist on the game winning goal for a 4-3 overtime win.

No surprise that Adam Fox has reached the 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker. Wouldn't be surprised if he makes the final 3 that will be announced on April 4.

6 of the Hobey Top-10 are defencemen. Fox leads all NCAA players in assists and points per game.

Two Calgary kids made the Top-10: Sophomore d-man, Cale Makar and Junior forward, Taro Hirose.

The Top-10 breaks down as: 4 seniors, 4 juniors, and 2 sophomores.

Here's the full list of the Top-10: https://www.hobeybaker.com/vote

Bob McKenzie says Cale Makar is the heavy favourite for the Hobey Baker

Makar has been great this year. Can see him going pro after his season ends.

It is Championship weekend in the NCAA. All six Conferences will crown their champions today. For some teams, it is their last chance to earn an invite to the NCAA tournament, which starts next weekend. For most of the teams who are still playing, they're locked into the tournament and the Conference title would just be icing on the cake.

Denver lost its semifinal game last night 3-0 to Minnesota-Duluth. For some reason, the NCHC is the only conference that has a consolation game, which means Denver has to play another game today, despite it having no value in the overall scheme of things.

Pettersen made a really nice play to set up Denver's opening goal in today's game...
https://twitter.com/user/status/1109557976895881216

The game is currently tied 1-1 after 1.

After all the Conference champions are crowned today, the tournament committee will sit down and schedule the regionals for next weekend. The final bracket will be announced tomorrow at 5:00pm MT. That is when ASU and Denver (and all the rest) will find out where they're playing next week and what their road to the Frozen Four will look like.

Because of their current rankings, there is a chance that Denver and ASU could meet in the first round of the tournament.

Denver won their consolation game over Colorado College 6-1. Pettersen had 2 assists.

Now, they wait for their seeding.

seeding announced. Denver and ASU avoid each other in the regionals so it is possible for both teams to get to the Frozen 4 in Buffalo

Arizona State is officially the first independent team since 1992 to make the NCAA Tournament.

Harvard's season could end as early as Friday afternoon. Just like the Hobey Baker, it could come down to a battle between Adam Fox and Cale Makar.

----------

ASU didn't play any games this season against any of the teams in their bracket.

----------

Denver's only games within their bracket were two games at St Cloud State early in November. Denver lost both games.

ASU and Denver are in opposite brackets, so they can only meet in the National Championship game.

Among the top-10 teams to make the most appearances in the tournament in history, Denver is the only team to make it this year. None of the usual powerhouses like Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Boston College, or Boston University made it this year.

The Tournament gets underway later today.
  • The first game is Harvard vs UMass at 1:00pm MT. It could be Adam Fox's final college game, but it probably won't be.

  • Denver is playing in today's second game at 2:00pm MT against Ohio State. Denver is the favourite, but it should be a close game.

  • ASU has the longest wait before their first game. They will play Quinnipiac tomorrow at 5:30pm MT.

The whole tournament is single-elimination at this point. If a team loses, their season is over. If a team wins, they live to play another game.

If a team gets two wins this weekend, they'll be headed off to the Frozen Four, Starting April 11 in Buffalo.

It doesn't look like any of the games will be on regular TSN, but they should be available to stream on TSN Direct.

Beautiful setup from Emilio on Denver's opening goal...

Denver is up 1-0. The third period is about to start.

Denver gets an ENG late in the third and wins it 2-0.

They continue on to play tomorrow against the winner of today's later game between St. Cloud State and American International (it would be a tremendous upset if St. Cloud loses).

Tomorrow's game starts at 7:00pm MT.

It was a tremendous upset.

31-ranked American International (they qualified for the tournament by winning their conference) defeated top-ranked St. Cloud State 2-1 and will play Denver tomorrow evening.

Denver's road to the Frozen Four just got quite a lot easier.

Just to put in perspective how nice of a season Emilio is having, Lottery Pick Wahlstrom had 19 pts in 36 games for BC before signing with the Islanders (dumb decision imo). Pettersen with 30 in 39. Terrific season for him and what amazing value at pick 167. Todd Button and the amateur scouting staff have been doing a fantastic job!

If you want to get real fancy with comparisons, MEP’s 30 in 39 stacks up pretty ok with Brady Tkachuk’s 31 in 40 u19 season.

Of course Brady is relatively 5 months younger and I don’t think MEP is a super pest but all signs are positive towards MEP having good pro potential. If he can follow it up and bump up his production next year to something between 1.2-1.4 points per game I think the hype train will be ready to leave the station. Even if he merely repeats his performance I think you could still expect an play driving bottom sixer, think Bennett/Mangiapane type.

Ya I agree, it’s too early to make any claims about what type of player he projects as but it’s looking promising. Seems like a very cerebral player

Emilio is headed to the Frozen Four! Denver defeated AIC, 3-0 on Saturday to advance to the Frozen Four without allowing a goal this weekend.

Denver now moves on to play UMass on April 11. They also advanced with two shutouts this weekend.

Unfortunately, ASU lost its game on Saturday, so their season is over. It will still go into the books as their most-successful season ever (so far). The program made huge strides this season and will be looking to be even better next season.
