Think there is a couple of psychology things going on here that maybe Peters is trying to trigger with the first line.

Gaudreau: Maybe Peters thinks he's looking to set up Monahan / Lindholm to much, play him with two guys that aren't really shooters to force himself to shoot more.

Lindholm: Hasn't really been going to the dirty areas as much, or has been tenacious on the pick. Play him with Tkachuk/Backlund who tend to live below the goalline and in the crease.

Monahan: Has been deferring to others too much and just seems to be trying to get to his spot. Play him with Neal/Czarnik as away to try to get him trying to carry the load a little more.

I cringe at the thought of current struggling Monahan on a line with Neal...yikes

Well if Monahan is as good as people say he should light it up on the 3rd line.

When I saw that line, my first thought was: "What did Czarnik do to deserve that?"

Why would being on the third line (with commensurate ice time) do this?

And what exactly does Monahan have to do to be "as good as people say he is" that he hasn't already done?

Playing on the 3rd line against weaker defenders should help him right?

Ryan will be an upgrade given the funk that Monahan is currently in.

Frolik is also a good compliment -- provides some energy when he's skating, forechecks well, and has some finish. I remember him scoring against LA in the second (?) game of the season last year, on a nice give and go with Gaudreau:

As for Johnny, this is a guy that helped Josh Jooris score 12 goals in his rookie season. Ryan and Frolik just need to keep their sticks on the ice and not miss the open net.

Sportselect Info
Flames Win = 1.75
OT = 3.7
Dallas Win = 3.0
Over 5.5 = 1.6
Under 5.5 = 1.8

I like Peters' idea in splitting up Gaudreau & Monahan at ES but I also don't think Frolik is a great fit as the top line RW. I would have paired Gaudreau with Neal to see if there is any chemistry there ahead of playoffs starting. We've also seen already seen that Neal + Monahan do not work (when they played alongside Gaudreau). I think swapping Neal and Frolik in Peters' lines is a better fit for the team and sends the same message to the top line.
Guess we'll see how it shakes out tonight and hopefully I'm wrong and both Frolik, Neal, and Monahan get on the score sheet.

I think they will be better focused after dropping points to LA, and will bear down to win the next two in hopes of making the game in San Jose more irrelevant. They will need to stay patient and work harder to get bodies in front of the net in order to get a few by Bishop. I think this game will go to extra time, but that the Flames will get the W in the 3-on-3. 4-3 GFG!

That's the idea, but anything he does or does not do while playing on the third line does not really factor into consideration of "if Monahan is as good as people say." He is. He's the highest goal-scorer and second-highest point getter in his draft class. He is in the top-fifteen of scoring centres League-wide over the duration of the past five years. Sean Monahan has nothing to prove tonight, and that is not what this move is about.

I am confident that the flames will be much better tonight.

If the flames can wrap up 3 points between tonight and Friday, I'd love to see some call ups and sitting a lot of the big boys for the last few games, including the Sunday game vs the sharks.

Honestly, I am concerned about this game, and the next one against the Ducks, both teams the Flames have struggled against. Hopefully, they make both of these statement games. Go Flames Go!!

Now it's up to Monahan to drive the third line instead of being nothing more than a passenger on the top line for the better part of the last month. If he plays the way he was with the top line, this third line will be annihilated. If this helps him find some drive again, I would imagine he'll be back up the lineup in a hurry.

I think the earliest we will start to see players sit is Monday. Even if the Flames are clear of SJ by Sunday I think the team will want to make a statement against the Sharks who beat them on home ice last month.

What he does tonight matters, make no mistake about that. What doesn't matter is everything he's done before this season. The Flames have a chance to go on a deep run and do something special and they aren't doing it with a player like him, playing the way he has for this long.

You're right, this isn't about proving anything, it's about getting this guy to be a productive member of the team again. Offensively, defensively, it all needs to improve. If this doesn't light a spark under him, I would be very surprised and concerned.

I don't care if they win or even if the lines work out, just want to see a greater collective effort.

I imagine that third line will get HEAVY offensive zone starts. They wouldn’t be pretty in their own end and if they don’t start with the puck in the offensive zone I don’t really see who the puck mover is to get it there.

Ryan with Gaudreau should be really interesting. You can’t say he hasn’t earned it.

I see Gaudreau decided to get a head start on that playoff facial hair
