$20+ million buys this amount of effort in edmonton!
It's these types of abysmal defensive efforts from McDavid that make me laugh whenever the media trots out the "best player in the game" claim for him.
I'm sorry, he's very very fast, and intimidating offensively... but the best player in the game cannot be a liability in half the rink.

Exactly. I can’t see how anyone can straight faced call him the best player in the game. He’s not good without the puck, and is lazy 3/4 of his time on the ice.
Handling the puck on the rush - yes, he’s the best in the world at that. Once his team has the puck in the zone, there are certainly better players. And the whole defensive part of the game.
They have cave man Kassian on as an extra skater with the net open. Predictably the play dies on his stick and the empty net is scored. Zac Kassian. They are soooo no good.
So... Hitch thinks they played good, I think he's basically done with this team. 6 points out of a playoff spot with 5 teams ahead of them for the spot, and the other two teams are just two points behind them.
McDavid will never be the player Crosby is. In my opinion he would have to win at least 3 Stanley cups, 2 Olympic gold metals(that he took a pivotal part in) and a world championship. Until he does that he's no where near close to Sid.
I’m sorry but prime-Crosby > McDavid. Until Connor puts in the work to improve his defensive game and faceoffs, Crosby is the reigning best player on the planet. 2 games in a row where McDavid’s floating cost goals. McDavid is a more prolific scorer but Crosby is without a doubt a better all around player.

Pretty sure this is the culture where you put a young star on a pedestal, and call out your team for effort night in and out. Not hard to watch a few highlights to start asking questions about McDavids effort outside of offensive zone rushes.
Part of me wonders if Hitchcock gave Draisatil and McDavid the practice off to see how they would react to that news. Basically told them to take the day off to see if they would buck up and get out there and practice or bugger off like they did. Maybe a test of their character and leadership? Does Giordano take that practice off?

It's at the point where these kind of clips of McDavid and Draisaitl show up after every Oilers game now. I suppose it means that Connor and Leon has officially turned into Hall and Eberle.
I mean, what the heck is McDavid even thinking in that situation? Blueger is obviously gunning straight for the net and the Pens are in possesion of the puck, so how does a professional hockey player decide to just cut his man loose to freely go in front of the net right there? It's not just lazy, it's stupid and contradictory to everything you ever learn about competing and playing defense when growing up playing hockey, or any team sport for that matter. How is it possible that all these players start to unlearn all the fundamentals in the game as soon as they pull on the Oilers jersey?
I know that the answer is in the water, but it would be interesting to know just what it is that is lurking in that water.

I never even thought of that, what a great question
They are in tank mode that's why some of the players are just letting them skate by and score.
To have a better chance at the draft pick they need to be close to the bottom. First it was Draisatil letting Kane skate by, now it is McDavid. Pretty sure we will see some more of this in the next while.

No, they aren’t tanking. They’re just bad. That’s the best part.
This is the rebuilt team. This is the finished product. A tank would imply that the management is selling off their best assets for futures, which isn’t true. I don’t think the players ever tank themselves.
This team is just straight up awful.

Is there anything he can do to get out of his contract? The money shouldn't really matter to him at this point. If I'm him, I get so fed up with this team that I don't ask to be traded because I just hate the team. It would be a dream if somehow the oilers lose McD and recoup no assets. He either asks to be bought out or just doesn't report or publicly says he's done with them.
