Again, Rittich is 20-4-4.

Andrei Vasilevskiy is 21-7-4
Carey Price is 23-13-4

He had a bad period. If any one has earned it, it's him. Dude deserves some good faith from you and other fans given the overall body of work, because it's been better than we probably could have even hoped going into the season and I think you're under appreciating what he's been. Give him this one, and move on. He took accountability for it in his statement, which is more than you can say for Smith on many of his poor nights.

Smith isn't being excused by any one because he hasn't earned it, and hopefully is gone in the coming weeks.

You just know the Flames are going to be really pissed after that one. I expect them to demolish Vancouver tomorrow. Makes me excited just thinking about that game. Final game of Hockey Day in Canada too.
I will be at the game tomorrow!

This is why you don't go all Oilers and sign a goaltender in the middle of the season based on a small sample size. I'm not saying that the Flames shouldn't re-sign Rittich but I'm not 100% sold on him being a dependable starting goaltender in this league. It seems to me the coach doesn't have a lot of faith in either of his guys right now which is not ideal.
After last night's game Rittich is ranked 1st in the league for goaltenders that have 1100 minutes (starters) in terms of GSAA (Goals Saved Above Average). He used to trail Gibson, who has had more difficulty of late.

In terms of dSV% (differential to expected save percentage) he's 2nd to Greiss (Islanders).

The Flames don't have a goaltending issue. They have one of the best starters, and one of the worst backups which gives them middling team save percentage.

I don’t agree with spending the assets it would take to acquire Bob, but I get the feeling both Teliving and Peters would be much more comfortable with a veteran goalie. Which is why we’re seeing Smith given every chance possible to find his form.

People are always more reactive to what they see in first games after breaks. The 960 guys are no exception.

In a couple of games no one will be talking about this one, and chances are the goaltending will be a lot better too, and no longer a pressing issue (aside from entertaining the idea of replacing Smith).

Rittich has been amazing this year. I am not worried at all about one off period by him.

I didn't like the first goal. It was a bit of a weird read with Kane spinning off Andersson, but that's a save you would like your goalie to make.

The second one I really don't have an issue with. Rittich didn't hesitate and made the right play by coming out and stopping the breakaway. Unfortunately he telegraphed his pass a little too much and Burns made a good read. Rittich's puck playing ability is one aspect of his game he needs to continue to work on and develop, but considering how good he has been in every other aspect of his game it isn't a huge deal.

I expect him to play great against Vancouver

I think Treliving is doing everything he can to upgrade the position—as he should be. But this idea that the coaches are giving Smith opportunities to “find his game” are wrong. Smith plays because he is the back-up goalie. He plays the number of games he does because the coaches are managing their young starter’s workload. That is all.

Calgary was desperate for a goal and he was trying to move the puck. 4-2 or 5-2 doesn't matter, they were likely about to pull him if the puck went up ice.

That was with 10 minutes left in the third. No reason to take that risk at that time of the game. I'm not trying to pile on Smith, I'm just saying I don't think he is good enough at this point. We need an upgrade.

The hottest of hot takes was Francis in the first intermission saying this was the turning point in the season. What a tool.

I'm starting to get concerned with our team. Tkachuk the so called best overrall forward has basically been invisible for over a month now. The only thing I ever see him doing is that same old move over and over where he gets the puck down low behind the net and then tries to circle in front of the net and tuck it in but it's clearly not working and he's become way too predictable. Rittich has slowly been declining over the past month or so as well and his GAA is going up.

Gaudreau is again terrified to actually shoot the puck with authority....why dude you have 29 goals already?

But yeah we need much much more from Tkachuk, Monahan and Gaudreau more direct more shots on goal. You can't score if you don't shoot FFS

Rittich is playing way more than Smith, you guys are acting like Peters kicked your dog. It's a good lesson for Rittich, be ready to go. Flames are a divisional playoff team already...the rest of the season is to get ready for the playoffs
No kidding, can some of you stop with the complaining about the pull? We aren't talking about Mike Keenan here....pretty sure Peters has a better handle on Rittichs head space than us. Francis is trying to drive this narrative too...like I said BSD is a young, very emotional guy and Peters probably understood that he would beat himself up over those couple crap goals. Pull him and live to fight another day.

Smith is a vet and can handle a few more stinkers I imagine.

Agree with the sentiment that the Flames played a pretty solid game outside of that first period spell.

I'm going to say I like that Peters pulled Rittich. This is the type of pro-active coaching we all wanted after 2 seasons of Gulutzan. Its not an indictment of Rittich's season at all. Its just in game management, and after letting in 2 howlers clearly it was time to see if you could prevent the game from getting away and shake things up and wake up the team.

Win against Vancouver and Tampa and suddenly this is a blip on the radar. The fan guys are overreacting based on the lack of games in the last 2 weeks. Flames need to get playing regularly and see what happens in the next 5 games or so.

Certainly a lot of criticism for Peters pulling Rittich, but as a goalie myself, I had no issue with it. Sometimes you just don't have it. Goals like the two he gave up suggest he wasn't on his game, so you might as well get him out of there before the deficit becomes too big to overcome.

From Galaxy91122, the fact that the Flames didn't score on any of these plays is baffling:

https://streamable.com/y29p1

The Sharks got lucky, the Flames will be fine. The game could have been a Flames blowout win with just a little better luck.

The Flames finally have a #1 goaltender develop within their system, and by some comments here it is apparent there are folks who still want to them to bring in someone else. Truly amazes me. Some people just like trades for the sake of a trade.

Rittich showed promise when he first cracked the lineup a few years back, and its great to see him seize the moment. Smith can be the perfect backup, and surely he knows this is his last season in the NHL. He'll find his game before the end of the season.

Well Rittich was also put into a bad spot for the 2nd goal. A careless turnover that results in a breakaway for Burns. The irony is that he made the right decision to come out albeit poor execution, but had he stayed in the net and gave up a breakaway goal instead, the goal isn’t on him and he probably doesn’t get the hook.
