To put it in perspective
McDavid takes a discount to help build a competitive team, only to see Mathews get paid almost the same while Chia brings in dead weight like Manning.
McDavid missed the playoffs 3 of 4 years with many more destined in the future while Mathews has never missed the playoffs, and a chance to go very deep this year.
McDavid started as a rookie with the following top 6 line most of the year
Pouliot-McDavid-Eberle
Hall-RNH-Draisaitl
4 years later he is saddled with the worst group of wingers ever to play in the NHL in the top 6
Lucic-McDavid-Rattie
Rieder-Draisaitl-Chiasson
Meanwhile Mathews isn't even on the first line for the Leafs
Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Marleau-Mathews-Kapanen

If I was Chiasson, I'd start shooting like crazy to bring my shooting percentage down. He's currently at 25% and has been hovering around 30% for the past couple of months. Even if he only manages to score a few more goals this year, if he can bring his shooting percentage down to a "sustainable" 15%, he should be able to lock up a nice contract based on his overall goal total.

I think I posted it on that other board.
But in the last 15 games Chiasson has scored 2 goals and 6 points is a -5 and has had about 20 shots on net.
He had a hot start and an ungodly shooting percentage over the first half of the season, but he's balancing out and not all that effective now.
He needs to cash in Meow!

once oiler fans see that he doesnt put up many points without McDavid, then they will let you know what a great 2 way player he is. just like the Nuge, one of the top 2 way centers in the league.
