You joke.... but he has everything that the Oilers are looking for in a GM.
1) Name Recognition - this is very important to them
2) Connection to the media - so good stories can be written and told about Lowe and Nicholson and what a great hire and decisions they made
3) Another guy who wants the Oilers to be on top - leading the league in highest paid player, and overpaying for everyone else. I mean, a five million dollar player is better than a four million dollar one - even if it's the same guy, everyone knows that and so too does McGuire.
4) A guy with little to no experience in the job, so Lowe and MacT can guide and train him as they see fit.
5) A guy that they can later blame for all the problems when things don't turn out they way they all thought.

He's had a few controller disconnect moments this season.

Yeah, I was watching that overtime and thought at the time that that goal was almost entirely on McDavid. Brutal.

Dominated eh?
I have a feeling that that's an exaggeration coming from the team that awards 2+ Oilers stars of the game win or blowout loss.

In the past seasons sure, but Gaudreau has really committed this season defensively.
Quote:
“His commitment this year on the backcheck and playing in the D-zone has been next level,” Giordano said. “He’s always been a great offensive threat, but now you see at the end of the games when we pull our goalie, a lot of the time, that’s the line that’s out there. And it’s a credit to all three of them. Monny’s commitment has been great too. Lindy’s great at turning over plays, as we know.
“Johnny can be so effective defensively because he’s so fast, a lot faster than people give him credit for. The other thing I’ve noticed is all the breakaways he’s getting this year because he can read the play and anticipates so well and can pull away from guys. I watch a lot of hockey and I honestly think he’s the MVP. I know he’s on our team and I get to see him every night, but what he does for our team is second to none.”

Look I get it, you have to take a goodnatured distraction swipe to pull attention away from your generational leader once again doing a lame flyby when he doesn't have the puck. He's pretty good at that.
Frankly, if I had a team that was desperate for points, and my so called generational leader was doing that, I'd be questioning whether he was playing for his team, the playoffs, or himself.
I mean I'm pretty sure that the Oilers have spoiled him a bit, telling him how awesome he is, how his shoulder tap "Lets go" speech was generationally inspirational, that its ok sweetheart, lets go get you a trophy, that its ok to leave practice early while the team is in the middle of a losing streak and he does.
But man, I don't know, if the Flames ever drafted first over all and picked up a generational player, I'd have some pretty high expectations of him in the old heart and effort column.
But maybe its just me, and I don't get it, maybe having a superstar player on a horrible team winning individual trophies is enough.

The extra 6 million a year should get you something, though, shouldn't it?

Where oh where were those generational crossovers (see Drew Remenda)?
Did he ever take a stride?
Full scale glide!
