In hindsight, that would have been brutal. Unless maybe they selected DeBrincat with the 2nd rounder.
So happy to have Backlund and Tkachuk.

As a disclaimer, I'm happy that this trade didn't happen.
However, I don't think the Puljujarvi would have turned out in Calgary as bad as he did in Edmonton.
It is very obvious from the littany of players who do better after they leave Edmonton (Hall, Eberle, Justin Schultz, Dubnyk) that the Oilers' player development system is badly broken. Only the strongest of prospects (Hall, Eberle, McDavid) are able to resist their system and able to show NHL-level ability while within the Oilers organization.
Compare this our development of our 2015 second-round draft picks (Andersson and Kylington); or other later round picks (Kulak, Brossoit, Granlund, Baertschi, Ferland) and to a lesser extent (Jankowski) who have spent time in the minor-system developing into NHL players.
Our system is way better than theirs. We don't rush players to the NHL and anoint them as the next saviour; so it is completely possible and very likely that Puljujarvi would have had a different trajectory if drafted by Calgary.

Perhaps this was a ploy, in Treliving inflating Puljujarvi’s worth. Honestly, why would the Flames ever make a trade like that, with their biggest rival.
Chiarelli takes Puljujarvi and we get our man.

It’s possible, but the Oilers have done a terrible job developing with Puljujarvi. It’s impossible to say if the Flames would have done better but he would likely have been playing with Monahan and Gaudreau that year which might have done wonders for him.
I also believe the Flames would have been smart enough to play him in Stockton for a year first, which also would have been good for him.

On paper it could make sense that the Flames would really want puljarvi.
Big RW and I dont think anyone suspected tkachuk of playing as well as he is today.
Would have been a gross trade in hindsight.

The Flames don’t have a strong track record for seasoning high picks either, they just picked better players :-)

In hindsight obviously not, I'm just stating the Flames probably wouldn't have put Puljujärvi in Stockton either. Puljujärvi was supposed to be much more ready for the NHL then Tkachuk at the time of the draft

It doesn’t make sense that Treliving was trading up to get Puljujärvi. If that was his target, and if he knew that Kekalainen was selecting JLP, then why did the Flames and CBJ not work out a deal to swap picks? This rumour makes much better sense if Treliving was attempting to move up to select Tkachuk.

I might be wrong and it could have already been posted. But I have a hard time believing this trade for the fact that it was highly reported that IF a trade was to happen at the draft it was going to be a three way trade with Columbus.

Did you watch him play in his draft+1 year? Puljujarvi was visibly lost. His hockey IQ is questionable to begin with, and he didn’t know a word of English. Playing on a top line with Gaudreau and Monahan would not have helped him, and it most likely would have frustrated the hell out of his linemates.

The right thing to do with Puljujärvi was to send him back to Finland that year. He was just far too raw to play in NA. I believe every other team would most likely have made this decision.

This is true - in fact, I also heard it said he was more ready than Laine. In hindsight, I think those who said that were only looking at size.
It's easy to say though that the Flames would have done the "right" thing. Who knows. Monahan, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, Valimaki all got spots out of camp, which they earned. Dube got a really good shot as well. Then again, Janko was held in the AHL for a year.
How did PullRV look in his first camp - I forget. I know he got a goal in game one - against the Flames. But in fairness, they did send him down after 28 games, for the rest of the season.

Because if Columbus drops to 6, then it's likely Vancouver takes Dubois at 5 since they were said to be wanting a C or D-man.

Actually it makes perfect sense. CBJ weren't willing to drop as low as 6th because they didn't think they could get Dubois there. That was reported/rumoured at the time. There were also rumours that Tre was doing a deal with EDM to swap picks then flip the #4 to CBJ in a separate deal. At the draft he was talking to CBJ, then EDM then both together.

The idea was that CBJ would switch from #3 to #4 so the still get Dubois, EDM would drop to #6 and get Sergachev and CGY would move up to #3.

Honestly if it came down to moving Backlund to get Tkachuk, I do that 100 out of 100 times/

Burke stated recently that every team basically had Puljujarvi 3rd overall. If the Flames were moving up to the 3 spot it wasn’t to draft Tkachuk.
We dodged a huge bullet there.

I thought I read before that the Flames actually liked Dubois most and if Backlund was the piece that was going out, this would make sense since Dubois would be the centre to replace Backlund.
Dubois was being compared to Iginla at the draft as a big tough power forward, but also one who plays centre.
I love Tkachuk, but I'd probably take Dubois over him just because of the whole centre thing.

I would take this with a grain of salt personally. First off how was Edmonton going to add 8.8 million in salary without sending out any? They didn't have cap issues at that time that they do today, but it's very rare that you see a team offload that much in salary without taking back any, let alone the two extra contracts.
We hear about these types of rumor at every draft, but we really don't see too many trades early in the first round that involve established players. Really outside of that year where the Flyers sent out Richards and Carter, there have not been a lot of top 10 picks moved at the draft for players.
