I think one of the most reasonable explanations for the array of desperation moves in the last 2 months by the oilers is that mcdavid's camp had previously told them that they'd better be more than just playoff contenders or he is out.

There was a recent article in the Athletic that basically GM’s in today’s NHL are all “one and done” unless they have a Stanley Cup or 10+ years of experience.
Something like only 9 guys on their second team, and only one (Lamarello?) on his third.
So odds are ANYONE who is fired as a GM you never see again.
