Every once in a while you have to remind yourself that it’s Jan. 10 and the Oilers aren’t dead yet, which in itself is an accomplishment.

Not being eliminated before US thanksgiving or Christmas is now an accomplishment.

Chiarelli looked like was might be putting his sorry season of generally managing the Oilers out of the playoffs last year behind him.

Chiarelli has largely left himself as a lame duck general manager.

Chiarelli’s latest expenditures with the final few dollar available from his mismanaged salary cap — Brandon Manning and Alex Petrovic — have yet to show they are any less incompetent than anybody else back there.

We were talking about Tkachuk in the big picture. And my point about the CBA is that his dad was that you couldn't sit out an existing contract under that old CBA, so he doesn't have a problem with hardball. And there won't be a discount.

That said, Treliving is the best contract negotiator I've seen with the Flames.

I agree Tkachuk will be a hard contract.

But as you said, Treliving's strength is RFA contracts. He's knocked it out of the park every single time essentially.
