I saw the scoresheet with Monahan and 10 shots and was shocked. Some great chances in there too.

Yeah Flames need to watch this falling behind business. Even if you outplay the opposition on balance, it's a bad habit that absolutely will kill you in the playoffs.

I hope that Rittich is early enough in his career that he can make adjustments quickly to what is happening with some of these bad angle goals, and that any bad habits aren't too ingrained. It is a good point that teams how have some film on the guy.

Those shots go in on a *lot* of goalies. I don't think there's much to be concerned about.

The Flames are getting into some lazy habits knowing or hoping they can outgun in the third. I think they get a spanking soon. A wake up call.

Johnny would have over 40 goals this season already if that's the case as he tries that almost every game multiple times. The Kane goal was pretty sneaky but I don't think it's a coincidence when two goals from poor angles get scored. I would say it's very seldom you see a goaltender get beat twice in the same game on shots like that so while nobody should be jumping off bridges it's something to keep an eye on.

Another old stat is goals scored, like the one Hathaway scored on the PK. I know one data point doesn’t refute an argument but was surprised it wasn’t at least mentioned in a section devoted to his performance.

Couldn't agree more.

Bingo has been a proponent of this thought for years now and it is the whole

"you win games right before a losing streak and lose games right before a winning streak"....or something along that line.

This club is digging holes that at some point is going to cost them. With the schedule this month, its a really bad time to get into such a pattern.

Between now and February, there are 2 teams in a playoff position they will face and one of those is on the precipice of falling out.

This is the month they can really solidify a hold on top spot....they need to take advantage of it.

Perfect shots are beating any goalie that ever played at any level....ever.

That's why they are called perfect shots.

Hawks bagged a couple in the same game....no big deal.

The first top shelf goal was a lot better than the second IMO.

That's fine but it remains that if those shots aren't placed exactly where they were....they don't go in.

It wasn't a positioning issue.

I was going to mention that but then thought otherwise since it was an empty netter as well.

Goaltenders are taught to play the percentages. That means going down early on pucks in the corners so that they can cover more of the net and be more explosive on passes out front. What that means is that for most goaltenders there is a two inch gap between shoulders and crossbar where goals can be scored. This space is there on almost every goaltender. Perfect shots are going to beat goaltenders there.

Would be interesting to see how many shots are taken from bad angles and how many get scored, along with how many passes in front get stopped because a goaltender was already most of the way in position.

I can tell you that more than half the goals I see on highlights are "bad" goals according to this site.

Turned out to be the GWG as well, with the late tally by the Hawks.

Also, idea that a goal over a goalie’s shoulder beside his mask when his arm is sealed to the post is soft is just getting silly.

I think after looking at the tapes of his high corner goals Rittich will be able to make an adjustment. He didn’t seem to move on either against Chicago. Not much time to move on Kane but more on the Saad shot. I’m not a goalie but is there enough time for a shoulder shrug/lift?

Anisimov IIRC was wide open about 15 feet out heading towards the net so Rittich had to cheat a bit on the pass.

I think he played it the way he had to and got beat in the 1 spot he could have by a perfectly placed shot.

I agree with this. For a shot from that angle it wasn’t great save selection but he looked like he was hedging bets that D takes the shot away and playing the pass.

With Kane he was transitioning from VH to RVH (post pad up to down), at essentially the right time, and Kane’s timing of release and placement was perfect. A bit closer in and Rittich can continue to use his trapper forward to take away the vertical angle to the top of the net.
