Friggin' Cyclists - We need to punish these people

As a cyclist who has had someone try and run me off the road, I'm pretty sure that you can see why I didn't find your joke as funny as you had intended. The sad thing is that there are overly aggressive drivers who will attempt to drive someone off of the road.

It’s legal to do exactly 100 in the left lane on Deerfoot. It doesn’t make you any less of an idiot.

I don’t see any difference with this lady. Sure she can ride legally but she knows what she’s doing. Not only is it an accident waiting to happen but she’s essentially holding up traffic as if there were an accident on that road every day.

How happy would any of the people ITT be if there was a lane closure on a major road on their commute home? Every. Single. Day. I bet we’d see a lot less sanctimonious posts about how Silver is being selfish.

What is the cyclist supposed to do though? Like I said, it's dangerous to ride on the sidewalk when it crosses driveways and there's large trees blocking views. So her options are:
1- walk bike 2/3rds of a kilometre
2- take one lane of a two lane road that is mostly a school zone anyway between Anderson and the mini mall

The few sanctimonious posts might be because the thread title, combined with the timing comes off as an attempt to start a cyclist bashing thread. Which I suspect was intentional.

It is also worth noting that, even with this occasional slow down, the auto-commuters on this route may still experience a net benefit in reduced commute times (due to less traffic) caused by this person's choice to commute by bicycle rather than automobile.

I cycle quite a bit and I don't buy that she couldn't have done something to elevate the situation. Honestly a fair share of cyclists are either brain-dead or just a-h@les. If you have such difficultly having situational awareness not to see the impact you are having out there then just don't ride.

And for the record before all the triggered cyclists chime in, yes...people in cars can br just as clueless or down right aggressive.

There are a number of studies which conclude that road congestion can be reduced by a modal shift from car to walking and cycling since these modes are more space efficient – as cars need more road space than other modes. For instance, there's nothing illegal about a family of mom, dad, an 8 year old, and a 6 year old on training wheels toodling down Elbow Drive in the right lane from Henry Wise Wood to Chinook Mall. However, most of us would question whether it's wise or considerate.

Not that it would stop some on here from raising up the banner of Team Cycle and defending the family on principle.

I think a big issue is that this city is home to both Canada's most entitled, obnoxious wannabe population of cyclists and Canada's most aggro over-bro'd jackhole population of drivers.

By far, you see more $9,000 road bikes being operated by some spandex clad Tour de Dips#*t wannabes here than anywhere else in Canada. Places like Vancouver, Montreal and even Toronto, people just ride to work in their normal clothes, or shorts and a t-shirt like normal humans. Here, it seems like a contest to show off who spent the most on cycling gear. I see so many jokers riding in a full racing singlet going from Inglewood to DT, it's just laughable.

On the other hand, Calgary is also the home to hordes of both Truck Nutz clad Ram 2500's driven by yahoos in flat billed hats AND European AWD SUV's owned by people who never leave the inner city and talk far too much about mouth-feel in craft beer (that's me!), who make it their mission to own the road.

It's just a recipe for disaster from the get-go. We're like the middle of a Venn diagram of syphilis and antimatter.

The City of Calgary's Traffic By-law permits the 6 year old or 8 year old to ride on their bicycles on the sidewalk. It does not permit an adult to do so. So I fail to understand how your hypothetical relates to the circumstances which prompted this thread.

In any event, the by-law expressly states that cyclists have the same rights as drivers to use highways. If drivers make exercising that right dangerous or unwise, I would suggest that we should be focusing on the behaviour of those drivers, not the cyclists.
