28-14-1 in 43 games required to get to 96 points. In the first half of the season the only teams that have a record this good (or a chance of making it):
1. Tampa Bay
2. Toronto (need to win 2/4)
3. Washington (need to win 4/5)
4. Winnipeg (need to win 3/4)
It may not require 96 points, but this puts into perspective how elite the Oil would need to be to get there. In this position they should be collecting picks...not trading. It would be nice to see them trade their 1st on a UFA to chase the dream..

They just said on TSN that the Oilers have failed to win their last 17 NYE games and haven’t won since about 1987! Of course the Flanes had a lot to do with that 😀

This isn't how Edmonton media works. They toe the company line, they don't blindly support every player and coach. They blindly support any player or coach that the organization supports.
When they get a sniff that a player or manager is on his way out they turn into rabid dogs and treat them worse than any media in any city treats a local player or manager.
This is right on script for Edmonton media. They see a guy on his way out so they're pouncing. If the Oilers suddenly turned around, made the playoffs and did some damage, the dogs would instantly turn around and praise the GM because they see him as supported by the organization again.

Brodziak is the only player on their roster who was even born the last time they won a game on NYE.

Great way to end the year. Tied for first in the West and the Oilers losing their 6th straight.
So cocky when they were 9-2-2 under Hitch. All of a sudden 9-8-2 since the coaching change

Here is some footage from an Oilers fan listening to the game on the radio in his car tonight and realizing the state of their team:

Having just watched the Jets/Oiler highlights, I think I realized something:
In each of the last two games, the Oilers have allowed a goal against immediately after having scored themselves and while their in-house goal announcement is in mid-stream.
Edmonton is so NG that they can't even allow their fans 30 seconds of celebration. (Probably better that way--keep fan expectations realistic.)

it really is the epitome of the life cycle of an Oiler fan
Experience short term boost to morale with something seemingly positive (eg. Getting a goal at home; Winning the UFA Lucic sweepstakes; Hiring Hitchcock and instantly winning a few games in a row)
Then experiencing the long term pain
(eg. Letting in 2 or more goals then after; Finding out Lucic sucks and have him for 6 more years; Hitchcock unable to mask a poorly built team and experiences more losses in a row)

I almost feel bad for Oilers fans, then I read quotes like that mark spector one from Jan 2017 about the Oilers passing the flames and never looking back and my sympathy just melts right away. Sure it's way less fun to beat down their spirits when they're already in the dumps, but just remember the second they start winning any number of games in a row (if ever lol) there will be several Oilers fans back to beating their chests while drooling all over their sweatpants

That’s the look of someone who has come to realize his forwards have no trade value.

Yes but they've already Oilerized Manning and given him the nickname ManDog.

Oh and watching parts of that Oilers game, Petrovic is exactly as the Florida fans as advertised. No positional awareness, chasing the play all night and really slow.
Great pickup
