Benn and Seguin are fantastic players, but I think people expected them to maintain their scoring in more defensive systems. Lindy Ruff had them playing run n gun, now they are playing more of a safe style.

I don't think Lite is worried about their scoring as much as he is about the effort though. If your coach just roasted you for a "####ing embarrassing" practice and then you are caught coasting in the neutral zone multiple times in the next game causing giveaways, yeah that's probably a good way to piss off your bosses if they are paying you 13M.
I also didn't see it as a huge deal if other options (i.e. internal non-public discussions) were held first. Either they respond properly and put in the effort expected of them, which is great for the team, or they don't and you're left with sulky star players putting in little effort - which seems to be the case right now except they were happy putting in that effort. It's not like the Stars had any hope if Benn and Seguin were coasting, so try to do something to get them to put in more effort.

I'm interested to see how they respond, or if it makes a difference at all, in their game against Detroit tonight. I wouldn't want to face a Benn or a Seguin with chips on their shoulders.

Benn and Seguin are as good as any duo in the NHL. When they feel like it. When it's fun, and convenient for them.
But they are invisible a lot, and consistent effort has always been the challenge. Every year Dallas is on the list of teams that under-achieves, always looking like this will be the year, but it never is.
I agree with those that suggest that management is doing this because they have already tried everything else, this is the final card to play.
And while the hope is that it lights a fire under their butts, I think management knows that this strategy is almost certainly a dead end street. I think the end game here is to get the two (or at least one of them) to demand a trade so that the team can move on and try something else.

In a way it's a bit like how Calgary was at the end of the Iginla years. Star players with long term no trade contracts on a team that is okay but not where they could be. This is the third coach in three years and the results are similar. Top players not playing hard too often but in a media market where not many pay attention to them so not much scutiny.
There was no shortage of people who thought that the core was rotten and needed to be broken up. Flames delayed too long in splitting it up and hindsight suggests they didnt send the players out in the right order and generally got awful returns.
Dallas likely fearing they are on that same path.

Benn is 29 and Seguin is 26. Their time is now. It isn't really like the end of the Iginla years at all.

Benn and Seguin both met with media this morning and said they have not heard from Lites during this season. Benn also said he doesn’t play for Lites, he plays for the rest of his teammates

Iginla never had another forward that was close to him in terms of calibre of player either. But I think as Iginla got to be 29 he started taking a few more nights off. I can accept backing off the physical play as he got older, but not committing to being strong on the puck at both ends of the ice consistently was not. This is the path Benn could be going down too.
The notion that these two might be okay with their current performance and setting a country club type atmosphere likely is concerning to ownership. These two have a lot of money and term left on their deals and if they can establish this culture now it's going to be hard to rid the franchise of it later on.

I think part of the reason he was traded for a song is Boston's GM at the time.

Gagliardi is probably sitting everyday in his office in Vancouver listening and watching Canuck fans fawn over Pettersen and Boeser who are being paid peanuts relative to Benn and Seguin and Aquilini's Canucks are only a few points back of the Stars.
I'd be pretty irritated with my $9 million duo too. I wonder if Lites' rant was ok'd by Gagliardi?

Sounds like the Stars have been putting their time in with Benn, implementing a ton of different resources trying to get him back up to his 2014 level.

Having spent a season around the team, the questions surrounding Benn, specifically, are not new. At various points last season from the highest levels on down there were repeated questions about how to get Benn back to the level that saw him make the Canadian Olympic team in 2014 and win the scoring title the following season.
There were meetings, formal and informal, with coaches, management and former players all aimed at trying to get more from the 29-year-old, all aimed at helping him find a comfort level that would allow him to fully take advantage of his enormous skill set.
That we have come to this point with senior management (and by extension ownership) flaming the team’s two most important players, it is clear concerns about where those players are at have deepened over time.

It was likely ordered. Cowboys have a meaningless game on Sunday before it becomes nothING but Cowboys talk for at least two more weeks....Cotton bowl is going on there today. Yesterday was the one time in the next couple weeks where the Stats might get any attention in that market outside of their core fan base.

NHL owners have created this monster system themselves by starting to sign superstar players to multi-year multi-million dollar contracts with NMC/NTC. Most, if not all, NHL players are proud athletes. Even a short demotion to the minors could wake up a player whose compete level is not up to par. In my opinion, NMC/NTC is the whole reason superstar players feel and are pretty much untouchable. What CAN a coach/GM/CEO and, ultimately, an owner really do, when a superstar player checks out somewhere in the early to mid stage of his contract? Nothing. Buying out mid-term is a financial disaster.
Fans are siding with Benn and Seguin here, but they are wrong. These outbursts never happen out of the nothing. There is no doubt in my mind that the normal progression of warnings, heart-to-heart talks by the coach have taken its course already without a desired outcome. The owner pays for all this. He has the full right to be pissed off and voice his displeasure publicly, if his highest-paid players are not listening to their coach and playing half-ass.

100% this. The product is worse with guaranteed contracts. The game is worse with guaranteed contracts. 99.9999% of people, are going to coast a little more when you get ginormous contracts that don’t need to be lived up to. All you have to do, literally is show up and not get injured after you get your massive payday. I don’t even blame anybody in particular. In fact- it’s human nature.
If the owners are that upset, they need to re-think the system. It doesn’t foster the work ethic they want to see. Well- it does- until you make these young men rich. Then it doesn’t. So you shouldn’t be surprised when Benn starts to take it a little easier. It’s human nature, and they can’t do anything about it, except buy him out. Which is even better for Benn as now he gets paid and literally doesn’t have to show up anymore.

When something like this happens to a team, I think it's a combination of a many factors coming into play which are difficult to sort out e.g. money, age, contracts, coaching change, team chemistry, players and team character, etc.
It makes me think how fortunate a situation we have in our Flames, with their excellent and consistent caliber of play. I would be very cautious in making any trade which may interfere with our present team chemistry.
