It really was worth it in the end and there's a bit of irony in that Ducks series was the only time in his career Draisaitle carried a line by himself and he got paid based on that only to never be able to do it again. He's a good player but only when he's playing with McDavid and you only need to look at Chiasson to see what playing on a line with McDavid can do for a player's stats.

You’re telling me the guy who was considered a draft bust up until age 30 isn’t actually the best goaltender in the league?!

Never gets old.
'it’s evident that when the story is written of this Edmonton team, it might not be known one day so much as a big, fast and tough team, but as a squad whose top lines passed around and shot the puck at a blistering pace, one not seen before at the National Hockey League level.'

It's actually pretty delicious in how this went down. They started winning under Hitchcock and quickly everyone in Edmonton got on the bandwagon, but if you looked at how they were playing it was all on a goaltender.
In the 17 games under Hitchcock the Oilers have only generated more high danger scoring chances five on five than their opponent three times.
Three times!
That's not a turnaround, it's being carried by a goatlender without a resume.

Would it be worth giving him the roster slot all year just in case? If he can’t crack Edmonton is he even competent?

We are working through deadmonton's six stages of grief:
1st Plan parade in September and decide if a coiler player will win vezina, calder, or hart or all three this coming season
2nd October, speak of new RW plug with reverence as the next coming
3rd Celebrate a win in November as a turning point despite losing 8 of last 11
4rd Early December, dial the post game call-in show whilst drunk and voice anger over ineptitude of the new RW plug
5th Blame the refs for bias in December
6th Throw jerseys on ice in February
rinse and repeat

McDavid's bout of polio followed by malaria occurs around January, too.

Although Eberle is having a poor year, I chuckle each time I see Spooner on the ice. The Oilers gave away a constant 20+ goal scorer, traded down to Strome than to 5 point phenom Spooner. How do you do that . Chiarelli level trades would be illegal in a video game. They just penciled Poolparty to become a PPG player right from the start. They had also penciled in Yamamoto this year...did not quite work as expected.
The Oilers literal game plan if to play McDavid half the game to make up for all the talent Chiarelli is throwing away just because Chiadenfreude

The funny part to me is that you have to give Oilers management a lot of credit for responding to a crisis.
The jersey-throwing fiasco had hit critical mass just as the team was about to move into their shiny new 'citizen raped' arena and management was on top of all of the really critical issues.
They astutely realized that they would need to significantly modify the netting so as to ensure that the level of difficulty to throw a jersey onto the ice would be prohibitive and that having the players walk through the concourse to get to the dressing rooms was a very, very bad idea.
They take care of the important stuff up north!
I think Kevin Lowe actually has the decommissioned 'City of Champions' sign hanging in his house.

Instead of shuffling deck chairs on the titanic, the saying will eventually enter the lexicon as “shuffling zykovs on the good ship lollipop”

It’s the reverse-paper-clip theory.

And he shot 32% and was an under water corsi player in those 7 games.
