Wow so 9am segment is being changed up, and 12pm hockey segment is gone too?

Likely will just be incorporated into the new format as Hockey Central is a pretty important brand to SN.

It just won't be Kirsch and Will Nault doing it is my guess.

So around the clock hockey? I love hockey but being a real sports fan in Canada kind of blows as there's just too much hockey coverage. How many times in a day can you hear guys talk about the same hockey talk and over? The afternoon show has been largely redundant for some time because they end up discussing the same topics as the morning guys and now it's going to be non-stop?

As someone who doesn’t live in Calgary, I only tune into to 960 to hear hockey talk (mainly Flames) and CFL talk. I have plenty of sports radio options for all other sports if I were so inclined.

For this reason I rarely listen in the morning as it doesn’t have much sports talk. But this is good news IMO as I will listen more often. Wouldn’t mind a local late night show either instead of the CBS shows they are airing. Some other Canadian sports talk would be nice too.

Even in Edmonton with a TSN owned sports station they forego Monday, Sunday, or Thursday night NFL broadcasts for a truly awful Oilers pre and post game show.

If it's not NHL or some CFL summer content it's really not getting more than a 5 minute segment.

I only hear Rome after 6:00 here as a tape delay. I'm not a huge fan, but at least it has different content. I get sick of the same guys covering nothing but Oilers, and I'd be the same in Calgary.

A hockey game lasts approximately 2 and a 1/2 hours.

Some people want the local content for that game/team to last 8 or more hours everyday even on off days.

It's impossible to fill the air every single day with such a narrow subject and be relevant, and why other sport subjects are so welcome IMO.

I have mention it to management and some of the personalities on 960 at various events through town. I do think the show and a business minded community like Calgary could benefit from a behind the scenes look at the business side of sports or hockey.

Have Brian Burke come up on talk about how to handle contract negotiations and all the things that are taken into consideration outside of what a normal fan knows.

Have someone talk about how the business side of radio, tv and broadcasts, tv right values etc.

Have someone come in and talk about what goes into the schedule planning and how teams deal with fatigue, travel, chartered flights, practice vs rest and recovery days etc.

Have someone like Ryan Van Asten, Flames strength and conditioning coach come in and discuss what goes into an off day from a workout perspective, challenges some players face as new players in the NHL or older players in the NHL, diet and meal planning for the team. Good and bad habits that same players have and how and off-season training program comes together etc.

You can still have lots of hockey talk and vary it a lot without talking about the same things over and over again. Yes we know Johnny has sick moves, yes we know Chucky mixes it up, yes some 4th liner or some 7th d man is getting benched.

TSN 1040 out in Vancouver has a segment once a week dedicated to the "sports market". I listen every one in a while and I enjoy the topics at hand. It changes things up.

When talking about hockey in Edmonton they are mandated to talk about one player.

Ha, this may sound interesting to you in theory, but I can almost guarantee you a recurring segment with a strength coach talking about nutrition and training would have 90% of listeners changing the station.

Other sports radio stations have local on air hosts, who take calls etc. to talk about a variety of sports but with a local flavor and focus on local teams. In a city of Calgary’s size it seems odd that sports radio doesn’t have this element.

I would think call-in segments would be a component of any additional programming. Basically, it's free content.

Calgary talk radio is a black hole from 10-12. Q is mostly indigenous hip-hop now, and 770 is all pipeline radio. Seems like a good decision for 960 to get some hockey talk instead of basketball/footabll heavy Rome.

I have always been interested how much per year it costs them to broadcast Rome and that wolfman jack guy - farrell compared to hiring some local talent.

I wonder if the fan in TO also picks up CBS sports radio overnight or if they go with local guys.

Keep in mind there likely is as many potential listeners working overnight jobs in Toronto as there are in Calgary on the morning drive.

I can’t stand the morning show. It’s boring and void of anything interesting.

Seriously, it has to be the least interesting morning sports show in Canada. Boomer and Rhett can retire please.

I agree. They loosely talk about the flames and then they talk about their boring lives as if they're the only thing that matters. Mix in some Jason La Canfora and I end up muting it half the time. So incredibly unprofessional.

They can go entire segments without talking about anything to do with sports. Monday’s are the worst because when they finally start talking about sports, it’s their stupid football picks. I don’t really bother anymore unless Burke is on.

I love the morning show.

In fact I have few complaints about any shows or personalities on the Fan. Except maybe the lack of sports variety. Its basically all flames all the time.
