I have such a bipolar relationship with Bennett. Ugh, it drives me crazy.
I really loved him today.

Instead of calling the delay of game penalty, the ref should have just dropped the puck. That’ll teach teams to quit dicking around

If this happened a few years back
Ref: *drop the puck*
Wideman: *drop the gloves*

There's both, but the carte blanche rule is 63.1

going off the previously quoted rule there's a degree of subjectivity to the call, that's why people don't like the call... the inconsistency in the rule's application has been biased heavily in not penalizing teams that try to slow the face off following icing. The fact they happened call it this game, with 2 minutes left was galling to many people.

63.3 Bench Minor Penalty - A bench minor penalty shall be imposed
upon any Team which, after warning by the Referee to its Captain or
Alternate Captain to place the correct number of players on the ice
and commence play, fails to comply with the Referee’s direction and
thereby causes any delay by making additional substitutions
(including, but not limited to, continually substituting goalkeepers for
the purpose of stalling or delaying the game),
|
Even the announcers on the telecast and on the sportsnet show were surprised the call was made.

Ha, they should totally do that. Is there actually a rule that says players need to be lined up before the puck drop?

I think they’re right. Rittich is a very good goalie.

I remember the Flames a bunch of years ago had that happen. Flames were taking too long so the ref just dropped the puck.

I like how Peters blends lines, I think it probably does a lot to get the players motivated. If you don’t play your best you’re not going to be playing in the third. Right now there is only I think five forward immune from that. That being Gaudreau, Monohan, Lindholm, Tkachuk and Backlund. I think every other forward in the lineup has been benched in the third at some point this year.
Also interesting to see how little Andersson and Kylington got today. Both played less than ten minutes. They really leaned heavily on the top four today.

Not sure if it was mentioned but Gio is leading the league in +/- at +20 after today's game. Brodie tied for 2nd with +19

Surprised the Kylington didn't get more time..he's been fairly fast and quite responsible most of the time.
And the idiot PbP guys on FSN which was the only feed I could find called him "Killington"...clearly had not done their homework.

Why not have some kind of 'shot clock' after an icing?
30 seconds to get ready for the faceoff after the icing call.
If you're not ready, call a delay of game penalty.
Makes things fair and clear for everyone.

I think you'll find most people don't like the call because they are Flames fans. Other fans seem to think it was the right call. Also homer Flame bias announcers saying something, which now appears to be contradicted, doesn't mean much.
I just rewatched. It's over 35 seconds after icing when the call is made, there are three Flames lined up on the faceoff (including one tieing his laces) but the refs seemed more annoyed at the others who are still standing and talking at the bench, not even trying to skate over by the time the penalty is blown. At 2:07 (real time), you can get a good view of the ice and they literally have someone leaning against the bench when the call is made.
So if there's a case of a team taking 35 seconds and having players leaning against the bench taking a breather on the icing call next time, then that would be inconsistency. But at this point it seems pretty excessive, Peters pushed it just a bit to far, next time at least pretend to appear that you're trying to get to the faceoff dot 'quickly.'
In fact the ref who calls it isn't even paying attention to Monahan, he's yelling because they still have the wrong guy on and the Flames trade off but he blows the whistle...

This seems like a good idea. The NHL really needs to go to a system like they used at the FIFA World Cup this year. Could be huge for improving the game, and this could easily be implemented as part of that.
