There are clearly fans on here that hope he sucks just for their vindication and would rather the team lose than have him winning games.
Over the course of his work, I agree he is not up to the level of this team and isn't the option we want going into the playoffs.
Clearly his days as a #1 goalie are passing him and we need better, but there's a difference in acknowledging that and hoping he sucks more.

I can't speak for anyone else, but nothing would make me happier than to be proven wrong and eat a huge chunk of crow pie. I just honestly don't see it right now. My biggest issue with Smith besides the weak goals is his consistency. You never know from game to game whether he will win a game 6-1 or lose 7-5. And that scares me. His shutouts and scorpion saves are all well and good, but they don't mean a lot when we don't know what to expect from one game to the next.
This will be my last post on Smith in this thread. I dont want to be a negative nelly after such a fun game and epic comeback.

Ya, and what you wrote said that people can’t blast him over one terrible game when he just had 6 good ones, whilst completely dismissing his previous 14. I’m glad that you admit that he is terrible overall, that’s correct, but don’t pretend people are just blasting him over 1 bad game because that is not true.

Saying he sucks has nothing to do with ego, it only has to do with the stark reality of the situation. He’s terrible. It’s plain as day. 6 games didn’t vindicate him, clearly.

exactly, his numbers still suck despite a decent six games
.888 save% 11-7-1 (on a team that has lost 10 games)
that is the body of work for a 36 year old "starting goal tender" They have to run with Rittich and see what they have. Smith is not likely coming back next season so its extremely frustrating to some that we are bending over backwards to get his game back.

Of course he didn’t read your post.

Definitely hear you; hopefully we find a way to get a clear #1 by the deadline.
I also will walk away from this Smith discussion, lol. Time to enjoy the win and not argue with people unnecessarily.

The six games would have seemed like evidence to a lot of people that he could get his game back. You are acting like it was a ludicrous thought process.
Smith playing well would be a good thing. The team should be trying to get him on track, not just giving up on him. And for all you know he is making progress and tonight was a blip. For all you know Rittich is on a downward slide, and his 20 minutes, while decent, are not indicative.

Chad Johnson can't carry Rittich's jock. When was Chad Johnson ever top 3 in the NHL in GAA and Save %?

Can't find it, but when he took over early in the season and went on a real tear, I bet he was up there in the stats.

I think Smith hurt himself on the 1st Flyers goal after that he looked off.

One side of this debate only wants to look at his losses, and wants to dismiss his wins. The other side is looking at each performance.
The team isn't trying to prove he's good. The team is playing who they think will win. He just won six games, and was getting better with each win. Rittich hadn't been winning and didn't look as good as he had earlier on. It's not surprising they started Smith again.

Well this is a pile of crap. I’m glad Smith won games, but overall I only care about an overall body of work, and like a QB in football what matters is CONSISTENCY. I look at Smiths good games and think they’re nice but overall he is god damn terrible. Probably the worst starter in the league and somehow we’re still top of the conference. That makes, at least what I view as rational fans, wonder how we’re going to win the cup with this fantastic team if we have such a terrible inconsistent goaltender. He’s terrible, and it has nothing to Dowith just looking at his bad games. This is the exact Joe Flacco conundrum, fans point to his odd good game while just dismissing the overall body of work. Mike Smith is freaking terrible. David Rittich should be the starter. And your assertion that Rittich took a step back is total garbage as well. He played well in every loss. Total dummy argument.

Was Burke indicating there was a goaltender in the AHL to call up?

Chill man! Some people have different perspectives. Some people agree with you and some people are looking at it differently, it is all good. Lets just enjoy a great win tonight!!

Yeah, I'm a total dummy.
First, you are totally misrepresenting my argument and not understanding at all what I'm saying. I don't think Smith should be the starter. I am not saying Rittich is taking a step backwards - I said for all we know he is, it was a comment about posters' assumptions. But on that, he hasn't played well in every loss. He wasn't good against Dallas. He would have lost against Columbus.
I'm not pointing at Smith's good games to justify his bad ones. But when a struggling goalie goes on a six game winning streak with a good save percentage and a dominant shutout thrown in there, a team could be justified in thinking that goalie may have turned a corner.

Comparing a young David Rittich to Chad Johnson is extremely stupid, but if we have to then let’s look at the alternative. It’s Mike Smith. So I guess we better ride Rittich and find out what we have and if he ain’t it then they need to look at paying a ransom for a good goalie because this is clearly a cup contending team despite the terrible goalie.
