Haha what a ridiculous conversation to wake up to. Of course if something that happened before an event were different, then the event might have been changed. But that doesn't mean causality.

I do find the lines convo interesting. I would guess that it is actually Lindholm who moves to centre. (which I've been hankering for for a while). Maybe Bennett to the top line.

Gaudreau-Monahan-Bennett/Neal
Tkachuk-Lindholm-Neal/Bennett

...is still a dynamic top 6. If it works, maybe Backlund becomes the best 3rd line centre in the league, with Ryan and someone else. Would be a dominant checking line.

I would call Dube back up to play center.

A team down 2-0 with 1 minute to go is a desperate, dangerous thing, a team down 3-0 is a dead fish. Monahan had the opportunity to create a safe situation for his team mates and made a dumb error instead. The Backlund hit wasn't entirely his fault, or even majority his fault, but he does shoulder some of the blame. If I was in Monahan's shoes, I'd feel like a giant dumb ass about it.

Let's not get overly extreme. Monahan shouldn't shoulder any blame for what happened to Backlund. His bad decision played a role in the way the last few minutes played out including the injury. That's all.

Isn't that basically what I said?

Does it matter? I think EE is more interested in what he says and if Boomer agrees.

If Lindholms first goal wasn't overturned due to the offside review, the game would have been 3-0 and Backlund wouldn't have been hit. Pretty obvious that the coaches challenge should be eliminated due to player saftey concerns.

Well you said he should shoulder some blame for the hit. It's more one of those things where better decisions lead to better results rather than blaming an individual for an injury on another individual.

I don't think anyone should really be giving Monahan a hard time about it, there's just too many factors to lay this all at his feet, but if I was in a situation where making a bad decision played a role in someone I cared about getting hurt, I'd think long and hard about why I did that and what I'd do in the future. I think that's about the level of responsibility Monahan should bear.

Being deliberately obtuse doesn't help the conversation. Coaches challenge its outside of Lindholm's or the Flames' control.

Monahan had a look at an empty net with 2 minutes left and elected to pass. If he scores instead, at 3-0 Minny doesn't pull the goalie and there isn't that much pressure in our zone thereby reducing the chance of injury for everyone because Minny would have given up at that point.

It's really that simple.

Literally every player who made any decision in the 59 minutes before Backlund got hit is equally as responsible as Monahan.

If Lindholm’s first goal hadn’t been offside. If any one of many passes that happened right before went in a different direction. If Hanifin didn’t flub the shot. If Gio doesn’t trip Koivu. Etc etc.

The point is, if everything is a chain of events, you don’t get to choose which unrelated event in the chain has more responsibility than the other. Monahan needing to bury that goal is unrelated.

What fantasy.

So if I understand this correctly in addition to all the things we already expect Monahan to do score goals make plays be better defensively we now also have the expectation that he should be able to predict the future and adjust his behaviors accordingly?

I just saw Monahan wearing a vest and holding the tailgate of a truck while riding a skateboard. Couldn’t believe it, and I did a double take.

Monahan turned and shouted over his shoulder that if he scored, the Minnesota player who shall remain nameless was going to snap over Calgary running up the score, and three Flames with over 30 points were going to be run, 2 of them sidelined with separated shoulders and the third a broken leg.

Boomer was on the sidewalk and saw the whole thing. We made eye contact, I raised an eyebrow and he nodded.

Then he said if anyone asked him if this really happened, he would deny it. And he looked like he meant it

Take that for what it is worth
