The idea is to provide an adequate stadium for more than just the Stamps, not a bigger stadium. In fact most ideas being tossed around actually allow for far less seating.

Wasn't even happy with the Olympics renovating McMahon because that means it would just prolong its existence; there should be no excuse to get a new stadium in full replacement, and hopefully in the next 10 years.
|
Lack of funds/ROI is a pretty good excuse. Not sure where any big public commitment will come in the next ten years, and we know the CSEC isn't playing for it all, so I would imagine reno remains most likely.

Yeah the new or reno'd stadium should not have a capacity over 30,000, just not necessary.

Agree, no need to derail this thread.

You must have a bladder of steal as you sit in the stands and scoff at the on field product, because I assume that you never venture to the "adequate" toilet facilities. I commend you for spending your hard earned money on tickets for such a trivial event.

Isn't the City on the hook for its upgrades? I'm sure that will go over well. Almost like it would have helped to have some extra funding if that's all we can hope for

Well there are none bigger, but certainly most are better.
How anyone can claim that McMahon is "fine" for anything is beyond me. It is a complete and utter dump. It also doesn't need a bunch of money spent putting lipstick on it. It needs to be replaced...full stop.
It's an embarrassment for the city that everywhere else in the league has a modern large venue that is multi use but somehow this city and its "progressive" thinking cannot figure out how to build one....nor even a field house. As has been mentioned lots during this thing...look at your civic "leadership" as to why we are a second rate city when it comes to these kinds of things.
Really all this talk has nothing to do with the Olympic bid though. The plan was poor, the execution and presentation even worse. that's why it failed.

….And the possibility to provide temp seating in case of the random extra event like a Grey Cup. Calgary cant even enter the discussion on anything else "major" with what we have now. Placing it somewhere that noise isn't a restraint could also open the possibility for concerts or other functions that are difficult to provide for currently.

And that's Wooley's ward, who went from strong proponent to voting against hosting.

Yeah, but even you concede a reno isn't good enough. At the same time, a new venue is tough to justify. It's quite the conundrum right now, far more than the arena which I suspect gets done by the end of the year.

Those concrete columns are 58 years old.
I would be scared just to sit on that thing in 2026.

Calgary using McMahon for the ceremonies was somewhat embarrassing in 1988.

Good question, I have no idea. The most opposed was Ward 10 with 65%.

Toronto and Hamilton got their stadiums in part because of FIFA events and the PanAm Games. Maybe we could do something like that...

I live in Ward 10.
I voted at the Genesis Centre in Ward 5.
I don't see the Genesis Centre in either of those Wards as a place one can vote. Or is that the "Falconridge/Castleridge" 'voting station' (506)

I believe it is the wealthiest ward, and would have the highest family income.
Contains areas like Mount Royal, The Beltline, up into places like South Calgary, and WildWood
