They have a couple of real problems here.
First of all, Lucic's contract. With his current level of production and with it being buy out proof, they're going to have to ride and die with that contract. I can't see any team taking that on without a major incentive.
Puji is an RFA at the end of the year. Moving him to the minors will probably piss him and his agent off. Staying with the Oilers and eating press box and not getting first line minutes will piss him off. When they play him, they're not exactly improving his value. I would expect that his agent will very quietly tell the Oilers that he's not interested in staying with the Oilers and if they don't deal him, he will look at European possibilities for next year. They're not getting a good asset for him, GM's aren't that dumb to give up that much for what is rapidly becoming a reclamation project.
looking at their stats, they have 2 goals from the blueline, one from Nurse and one from Bouchard. Their blueline has contributed a total of RNH, McDavid and Drasaitl have scored a total of 19 of their 32 goals, their next highest scorer is Chiason with 4 goals,
Their uber young future in Yamamoto and Puji have combined for 2 goals and 3 points.
The winger solutions for McDavid in Yamamoto and Reider haven't really worked out, Reider has 5 assists in 11 games, Yamamoto a goal and a assist in 11 games.
Lucic has 1 goal and 3 assists in 11 games, but got 2 points in game 3. He's also a minus 6, That tells me that he's too slow to backcheck, and no matter what Oiler fans say about being faster, he's merely a slow fast guy. He doesn't look fast or quick.
Cam Talbot has a .904 scpct in 9 games, which should be concerning, watching the game last nigh he makes some big saves, but he's not terrific and he's going to wear down again. Clearly they have no confidence in Kokinen the 2.5 million dollar wunder boy from Europe.
So clearly the strategy is going to be to outscore their opponents, but they don't have enough balanced scoring to do that. Beyond their top 3 they're getting no scoring support. This is a team that right now to me is an illusion, they're winning inspite of themselves.
Oh and their pp is 14th which is ok, but their penalty killing is 28th at 69% which is worse then last years 76% that tells me that the Oiler nation argument about the special teams being a fluke last year is incorrect and it should be the expected.
The Oilers are 22nd in shots for and 24th in shots against.
This is a team with a rotten foundation just waiting to fall in on itself, and when it does it could be devastating and awe inspiring at the same time.

Not to mention Kevin Lowe and other staff members who held tenure during the past 12 seasons and are still employed. It's a shuffling of the chairs, nothing more. I don't doubt McDavid's agent forced Katz to shuffle things around. There was plenty of talk about McD pulling a Lindros and not a single person would blame him if he did. I think Katz gave into the agents threat and told him the OBC would be behind the scenes. McD and his agent bought it. And yet on the website, it clearly expresses how these guys are still making decisions and working with Peter Chiarelli up close and personal.
The OBC will never go away. Never. Even if Katz cleans house again, it's just another shuffle and it's right back where they left off.
Oiler fans used to crap all over people who even mentioned McD leaving. But IMO it's not a matter of if, but when. I truly don't think he will make it to the end of this contract. Another season in the basement, and it could be as soon as next summer.
Maybe it's just wishful thinking on my part since I'm a Flames fan. But the guy is a human being like the rest of us and wants to succeed and build a decent legacy. I'd be cheering the hell out of the guy like I do with Crosby if he wasn't an Oiler.
Entertaining as hell to watch, because Edmonton is straight up no good.

I have a stupid question. What's OBC?

You know that in a year or so or even at the end of this year, if Lucic continues to errr suck that the Oilers are going to try to manufacture a career ending health condition. Unfortunately for the Oilers this is so blatant that the NHL is going to force Lucic to see their doctors, hopefully deny it and then fine the Oilers their first round pick for every year of Lucic's remaining contract. But the biggest punishment is forcing the Oilers to continue to employ Lucic who is a throwback who can't function in today's NHL.

TEN GAMES. Cam Talbot has played ten of the Oilers's 11 games in October. The plan appears to be to run him out there for another +72-game season.
*EDIT*
Since he was acquired by the Oilers Talbot has played far and away more regular season minutes than any other goalie by a country mile with 11,844:25. The next closest in this three-year sample is Devan Dubnyk, who has played 227 fewer minutes.

Devan Dubnyk?
Man, can you imagine if the Oilers had a workhorse like that guy (Currently 5th in save%, a full 0.033 and 21 spots ahead of Talbot)?
I mean, it wouldn't solve all of their problems, but probably good for another win or two.
But who am I kidding, where could the Oilers ever get a guy like Dubnyk?
Might as well be wishing they had a guy like Taylor Hall while I'm at it.

Even a guy like Eberle would round out their scoring a little, and don't get me started on their defence. A player like Shultz or Petry would make a big difference.
Who am I kidding though, they would all probably get all chased out of town in favour of quality players like Kassian, Strome, Russle and Lucic.

Was just ranking the OIlers escapees in my head:
Hall: Hart
Dubnyk: Masterton winner (for escaping), Vezina top three, Hart top 4 (all 2015), all-star.
Schultz: Stanley Cup
Cogliano: Nominated for Masterton in the same year as Dubnyk (for the same reason), ironman streak.
Eberle: 59 points - not bad.

The Edmonton organization is the equivalent of an Elephant graveyard.
It's where rookies and established vets go to die.
God bless those who escaped to a better place.

As much as I want to see this franchise forever toil away as completely unremarkable they're still doing okay this year unfortunately.

McDavid and Talbot need all the help they can get. The league knows they're not gonna get it from their teammates, so they gifted them another soft schedule this year. Anything to give them a leg up on the competition.

Unfortunately McDavid is a great player. They are truly going to ride him into the ground though and imo hes likely to get injured or "sick" again sometime mid season. Then they will truly be boned.

I’ll never forget Stauffer’s quite about Dubnyk 5 years ago on the Fan morning show...
“Just make a save.”
Riiiight.... that was the problem. Not the swarming porous, lack of commitment defensive personnel.

“We got Devan from Edmonton, and what we realized very quickly was that Devan has a lot of… I’ll say bad habits he’s picked up this year,” Predators coach Barry Trotz told Nashville radio station 94.9 Game2 on Wednesday. “We started him at home, and you could really see he was out of sync in his game, so we wanted to spend some time with him working with [goaltending coach] Mitch Korn, just being able to get his game in order.”

Calgary needs to pry Korn away from Trotz, who he's followed to three teams.
