Harper named Time's top Canadian newsmaker
The Canadian edition of Time Magazine has chosen Prime Minister Stephen Harper its 2006 Newsmaker of the Year.
Contributing editor Stephen Handelman writes that the prime minister who was "once dismissed as a doctrinaire backroom tactician with no experience in government has emerged as a warrior in power."
Handelman says Harper defied conventional wisdom about how to lead a minority government — "very, very cautiously" — instead pushing through "bold" changes, including:- Slashing more than $1 billion in federal programs.
- Reshuffling the federal bureaucracy.
- Reopening the wounds of the national unity debate by supporting Quebec's right to declare itself a "nation."
If Harper wins the majority he craves, in the election expected sometime next year, he may yet turn out to be the most transformational leader since Trudeau," the magazine says

IMO Harper is what this country needed.....you can't even compare Mr. Dithers to Harper. Even if he doesn't get a majority in the next election I will be just as happy if they are governing under a minority.

The left winged socialists need to equate Harper to America, because the scary boogy man rhetoric is all they got.
Can the Liberals talk about Ethics? Liberals, you want to answer that one?
Can the Liberal talk about results? They play an amazing shell game where they appear that they do things but in reality they haven't done squat. They sign up for Kyoto, knowing it will be an impossible goal to achieve and leave the problem for the next leader. (not to mention that Kyoto does not remove one atom of pollution on this planet ... just a transfer of wealth from developed to non developed countries)
They have and always be populists with absolutely no substance. And now they are populsts with a French national leading the way.

Putting aside the fear mongering, who else would you select as Canadian of the year?
Can you even look at the question objectively? Can you put aside your evident hatred of Harper and what you have convinced yourself he stands for, and objectively name one person who has had as great an impact?

I don't think he's all bad, in fact in this minority situation he's pretty good. I like the senate reform he is proposing, as well as what he is doing in the Telecom sector. It's just that ever since it was known that he would have fully supported the U.S. in the invasion of Iraq, I simply do not trust him.

I think a lot of people were duped.....and many people including myself would have thought twice and done things different if we really knew what we know now. I still think that Saddam was an evil person and needed to be removed....the US just ****ed it all up.
