I think the Sharks would be a perfect spot for JHS, so I hope it never happens.

I've always been intrigued by a project with a chip on their shoulder, though one must wonder why that chip is there

31 points in 50 games in the AHL isn't screaming to me that this is a guy with enough offensive skill to make up for the fact that he's a terrible two way player and seemingly not a great team mate.

Sounds like he has poor hockey IQ.

His ego through the years has shone through. My guess is that Florida eventually gets him. They seem to be open to taking castaways in hopes they flourish...on their hockey team and their residents.

He did put up .5 ppg in the NHL though.

I think if JHS gets surrounded with the right people, he can become a really good player. But, that means the team that trades for him (if anyone does) has to spoon-feed him NHL minutes because he will not be happy to be playing AHL minutes again if traded.

A player who clearly thinks it's never his fault would not be welcome on my team. It's a team game that has no room for inflated ego's

And that was always the knock on him. If he hasn't figured it out by now, he probably won't.

I rather play Michael Stone on forward.

I wonder if that non-trade (Dougie Hamilton) that Peter's spoke of the other night may have involved Flyers goaltender Alex Lyon?

Interesting note from Pierre LeBrun's article this morning on The Athletic. Figured I'd drop it here:

There has been general discussions between the Smith’s agent Kurt Overhardt and the Flames but the sense right now is that both sides are comfortable letting the season play out for a while before reassessing the situation. Overhardt, in fact, was in Calgary last week to discuss their game plan regarding negotiations with Smith. Reached on Tuesday, Overhardt said Smith was open to staying in Calgary under a new contract but also comfortable with the idea of hitting the market on July 1 if a deal can not be reached. I think if you’re Flames GM Brad Treliving it makes sense to see how the 36-year-old Smith handles the work load again this season before moving further down that contract path. Overhardt insists his client has the body of a 30-year-old, pointing to the low mileage on Smith’s body. But the CBA only looks at the date on a player’s birth certificate and being that Smith’s next deal will fall under the 35-and-over rules, the Flames or any other team will want to be careful with term.

Except the reason he's played fewer games is because he's injured a lot.

Rightly or wrongly it doesn't seem like the Flames were prioritizing goaltending in the off-season. They had their guy in Smith going into this season.

The Hamilton chip was going to be played to change the make up of the roster, and seemingly address some gaps at forward.

I think the general theory that it was a deal involving Simmonds makes sense. I'm happy they found the Canes deal to turn back the clock a little bit.

I remember a Treliving comment about looking into a change at goaltending and him saying that it was ongoing... (something along that train of thought)

Supposedly, Alex Lyon has starter potential.

There is zero reason for the Flames to sign Smith before free agency.

The comments on Smith, and letting the season play out, sound exactly like the ones from both sides when an extension for Elliott was a topic.

We know how that worked out. Its like "wait to see how the season plays out" is code from both sides for "not sticking around"

I've never understood the "low mileage on the body" argument. That only matters if you are discussing health of a player. It's the twitch muscles, strength, flexibility, durability that degrade with age regardless of mileage. Just being a millisecond slower in reaction can have great effect on performance as that's why you see these 30 year old football RB's who most are in much better shape physically than when they were in their early 20's however as they get into their 30's they lose just a little bit of burst when cutting or accelerating and it's the difference between a HOF RB being all-pro or over the hill. We saw it here with Hiller in that his first season was very respectable and the 2nd year his play fell off a cliff. Just a little slower to react and he went from average NHL starter to worst NHL goaltender in a decade. If Smith is looking for a 2 year contract I politely nod and tell him we will talk when the season is over while in the mean time moving forward like he's not going to be part of the team past the end of this season.
