I am guessing it is because he is leery of how Neal would do with the number of defensive zone starts that line eats up.

There aren't a lot of NHL fans in Toronto just lots of Leafs fans and a team like the Calgary Flames may as well be the Phoenix Coyotes for all they care as no Toronto, no care.
Southern Ontario is alot like the states. Southern ontario melds in with upstate new york almost seamlessly.

I love how everyone thinks Jim Hughson hates their team.

It's funny, I have thought Neal was decent defensively so far.

Good point, but Tkachuk and Backlund are good defensively. That line needs help in the offensive zone right now.

I don't mind him. I thought he did a good job last night and overall is pretty good.

I think he has been okay, but I don’t believe he is as strong back there as is Frolik.

I'm sitting at work and I can't even concentrate, last night just feels so surreal right now, like did we finally beat the leafs at the ACC? Fourth times a charm for me!

Last night might have been my favourite night since moving here. Walking around after the game and just getting so much love from all the flames fans that were out, just the best feeling. Even leafs fans were shaking my hand and telling me that the flames played outstanding and absolutely deserved the win. Man what an awesome night!

I thought Hamonic and Lindholm were standouts. Johnny had his moments of greatness like always and Monahan did his usual "what do you know - a goal and an assist". Thought the third line did their job admirably.

I generally liked the third line, and Neal was in there all night. The rookie D pair was just fine, all things considered.

Well, no, but if they are not into a heavy checking role on the night (which is rare), maybe Backlund can get Neal going without too much loss of defence. Frolik can play on any line except the top line IMO.

I thought that was one of the best games Monahan has played in a couple weeks. He looked strong on the puck all night. What a relief.

My thoughts on the game was that it was basically a reverse of the Montreal game where we were the team outplaying a team with superior talent but an outstanding goalie performance from them kept it close.

The leafs really didn't skate that well last night, lost tons of puck battles, and we were the better team.

I don't think we can read too much into the performance of smith, he made a couple lucky saves in the last few minutes but still looked shaky but it was good to see him get the bounces when we needed them. I would think it would be a much closer game and probably a flames loss if the leafs were firing on all cylinders last night.

all that said, the forward group looked great, the only exceptions being Mony for most of the game, he looked slow and disinterested and disengaged but he gets a pass on that because when he did show up he got us the win with the huge PP goal and the nice turnover on marner leading to the goal.

The fourth line was really flying last night, and aside from getting caught on an extremely long shift that basically led to the leafs goal after they finally made a change but left the D stranded, they were awesome.

I didn't think ryan was great but his linemates were picking up the slack for him which was good.

Bennett and Backlund continue to be extremely unlucky, Bennett with the puck on his stick for an empty netter that got blown down, and a post, Backlund with a fairly wide open net that he fired into anderson's crotch.

Second line was excellent, and frolik seems to have found his legs which was critical.

All in all a good game but I think a lot of the good stuff might get overplayed as their opponent really didn't show up.

Wait - I was sure in game that he was supposed to be a second line winger.

I thought Jankowski was much better tonight. IDK, I kinda like Czarnik but he needs to snipe one here and there to play regularly.

I also love the fact that we have a guy like Stone waiting in the wings while our young guys play great. Rasmus and Juuso are incredible. It's comforting to have Stone to come in and pick up someone or fill in if we have injuries. Cap hit will probably be an issue next year but we can burn that bridge when we get to it.

Yes, exactly.

This is why I don’t get the few (only?) complaints about Stone’s cap hit sitting in the press box. For this season it does not matter, and I feel a hell of a lot better about having Stone as the next man up than I do Prout.

The most impressive/surprising thing about Lindholm I've found this year is just how fast he can get his shot off. Last night's goal was especially quick...you could hardly track the puck even in the replay. That was something you'd expect from a pure goal scorer like Laine or Ovechkin.

It's probably why he's found so much success this year. If you have a guy like Gaudreau feeding you the puck, and you can get it off quick, that has potential to be a pretty deadly combo. It's one of Monahan's biggest assets too (although Monahan seems to excel more in tight).

I'm still puzzled by the Carolina fan scouting report that he had a poor shot, because he's shown the polar opposite.

We need a homer broadcast. I can't stand watching this stuff anymore.

I don't care about Johnny Friggin Goodrow, his stick, what he had for dinner last night, or what his favorite colour is. I don't want to hear the hot takes about how good every team the leafs play against are, because they all suck and we are way better. I don't care about their loser rookies that aren't as good as Marner or Matthews and I want them to go away.

I work hard all day and I just want to come home and hear about Leaf hockey.
Can't imagine watching BudNet or TMLSN coming away with the opinion that you need MORE of a homer slant

But I guess anyone wondering what it's like to talk hockey in SW Ontario has a good idea.
"Are you going to tell me how great the Leafs are? No? Not interested.
But I'll yammer at you about Gardiner for 30 minutes assuming you watch all our games. You DIDN'T watch the Buds last Tuesday? Do you even watch hockey, bro?"
