I was thinking Jeffrey Maier at Yankee Stadium against the Orioles. Tony Tarasco was waiting to catch the ball on the warning track and Maier reached out into the field to bring it into the bleachers.

Definitely thought it was fan interference, Betts at worst is getting his glove on the ball without the fan. But yet another example tonight of why the MLB will never be as big as it can be, that was an excruciatingly long game for a straight 9 inning game. Absolutely no excuse for a 9 inning game to take 4 hours or more.

It’s only fan interference if the fan reached into the field. Seems to me Betts was reaching into the stands which by definition can’t be fan interference.

It's tight, like really tight, you could argue the fan reaches over and the ball is over. But if the fan isn't there, Betts will likely make the catch. It's unfortunate because it totally looks unintentional by the fan, but I still think it's interference, although as the broadcast said had it been called a HR first, it probably stays a HR. And I want Houston to win because #### the Red Sox, but I think they got it right.

Those two bases loaded catches in the 9th were incredible. Thought the Astros had tied it up, after already having thought Red Sox has blown it open.

That first photo, the most definitive one, sure makes it look like his glove is in the stands more than the fans are in the field IMO. Huge Astros fan here so I’m certainly not impartial.

Second, I'm really not too thrilled that media outlets publicized this guy's name. Can we not learn lessons from the past and then extrapolate to the social media age? Does it really add a fundamental component to the story? Is the story radically incomplete without naming the guy? It's ridiculous.

That isn't the standard, is it? The fans can interfere with his ability to make the catch, and it isn't "interference" per the rules unless said interference occurs within the field of play (i.e. unless they reach over the fence). Is that right?

You are correct.
Betts has his glove well past the vertical plane of the wall and I think the ball was past the plane as well.

Yeah if you are going to call fan interference seems to me you need clear evidence of a fan interfering within the field of play. I have yet to see that.

There was three of them involved in the play, it looked like he reached out above the wall, certainly the guy on the right was reaching out passed the wall. It was not clear on TV so you have to go with the guy who called it, and he did not hesitate.
I don't think you can call it a terrible call, it was close either way and you have to give the benefit of the doubt to the ump and the player. If he catches it, its a top 10 highlight on Jay and Dan.
