I'm sorry, after a 5-2 loss on a west coast trip in October, when the team is 5-2, there is nothing "glaring" at all. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. Let the World Series finish before letting out your inner Eeyore.
****ing Boston fans. :ha:
Look in fairness, we beat Ottawa, Detroit, Edmonton and Buffalo. You are talking about the trash heap of the league, potentially most of the teams who will be picking in the top 10.
We've lost to the only 2 legit playoff caliber teams we've faced, letting in 12 goals in those 2 games. October is a super soft month, let's get those pts against everyone we can. Go look at February's schedule. That's the month where you'll know what you've got.

The biggest problem I have with the Gaudreau hit is that it was blatantly late. It also came blindside. Hopefully Johnny's okay though.
Two biggest things I noticed on the game:
First, the number of times we got sticks in the way to interfere with Boston passes. Especially in their zone. That had to be frustrating as hell for the Bruins.
Second, Brodie looks a lot more comfortable on the right side. But my god dude, stop with the soft clearing attempts to nobody.

Loved the way the flames played this team with speed and a super aggressive forecheck.
It’s awesome to see how Peters has managed his players so far. Frolik is a great example... veteran guy who was struggling to start the season so he sits him for a game. Then puts him back in but not just on a fourth line role playing 5 minutes a night... instead he puts him back up on the second line with the huge responsibility of shutting down one of the best lines in the NHL. Frolik responded well and was the best player on the ice last night.
I could see this turning frolik’s season around. It was a wake up call to scratch him but also showed Peters still had confidence in him and that he can still be an important part of the team by putting back into a prominent role. That’s how you motivate players.
Thought Bennett had another strong game again tonight. Would like to see him or Janko on the second powerplay unit in place of Ryan.
The hit on Gaudreau is a correctly called interference penalty. If Bergeron or Marchand or McDavid was six inches from the net and about to collect a rebound with nobody between them and Smith, whoever the closest D is better skate through him.
McAvoy kept his elbow tucked, and he doesn't take extra strides. Yeah the puck isn't there - that's interference. If you're going to be 5 ft 9 and play in the NHL, this is going to happen once in a while.

That might have been the best, most dominant game I've seen this team play for an entire 60 minutes in a very very long time. There were times in the second period in particular where the Bruins were completely and utterly shut down. At times it looked like an NHL team vs a beer league team. I think the score flatters the Bruins a bit.
With that said, it takes two to tango. The Bruins sucked, plain and simple. They probably had an off night, which does happen on occasion even to great teams.
Still, what I saw last night was promising.

The only thing I really kept getting frustrated with was how Ryan apparently is supposed to be Gaudreau lite on the second PP. He was the player hanging behind to pick up the drop pass, responsible for the entry. Derek Ryan, the 4th line center. Bruins PK was good no doubt, but PP2 barely got over the blue line, and I imagine this team has a handful of players better suited to take care of the primary zone entry on the PP behind Gaudreau. I like Ryan in his role, and I know he's supposed to be a PP specialist, but please coach, don't turn him into the new Brouwerplay guy.
What a monster win! Totally thought the Flames might fold and put up a stinker. Instead, they dominate most of the game.
Frolik was a beast. Maybe his best game as a Flames. Wow. Where did that come from?? More please! 3M was epic last night!
Smith was great, especially in the first. Could have easily been the Bruins on the board, but he stood tall. Good bounce back game for him.
Bennett was awesome again. Man the kid is starting to round into form, slowly but surely.
The D looked great. Andersson was really moving his feet all night, and sweet to see Vali with his 1st of many goals as a Flame.
The depth really shone through. It seemed every line was wave after wave of attacking and possession. Reminded me of the Red Wings in the 00's when they just wouldn't stop coming at you and every line plays the same. It's always been a fantasy of mine to have a Flames team play like that.
I desperately wanted Alain Vigneault to be the coach. Was disappointed when no-name Bill Peters was hired. Then was cautiously optimistic after his amazing presser when I heard him speak the first time. Now he's a god damn legend. Watching him mix and match lines, preach accountability, and do all the things real NHL coaches do. Still early, but early on it looks like BT nailed that hiring out of the park.

Ryan should only be on the powerplay if we're nuked by injuries.
I assume Peters knows this - I'm sure he wants to get the new acquisition some extra looks to pad the stats early on and avoid becoming a whipping boy.

elbow was far from tucked. The camera in the corner got a great angle. Call it interference, call it elbowing. It was a penalty. The question is if the league sees it as a blow to the head.

I recall a lot of comments when we signed Neal regarding this beautiful hit. McAvoy made the right play, however may have got an elbow in there. Max 2 min penalty, no more. But the play is totally legal.

The difference is Segin is touching the puck. He hits it twice and then Neal hits him. Neal's contact is right on the crest with his forearms.
compared to the hit on Johnny where the puck isn't around and on this angle it appears like an elbow to me. Maybe someone can slow it down.

He for sure throws an elbow. Johnny's not looking for the puck, he's trying to regain balance. The puck isn't there, it's in the corner (and crosses right in front of McAvoy before he lines up the hit. McAvoy actually switches sides in order to throw a right elbow, instead of just bumping with his nearer left side.
It's late, at the head, with an elbow, against an off balance player.

Great game, this team looks so composed compared to last year. Much less running around in their own end, much better zone exits and less turnovers.
I only wish I knew why Peters keeps playing our fourth line on the second pp unit. Other than that, pretty solid overall.
We should have fired Glen Gulutzan last Christmas instead of keeping him around sewering this team.
He was a complete passenger. He made this team worse. He could have been replaced with a Mop and the team would have been better for it.

I agree it’s a interference penalty. But it was also a bang bang play and I didn’t think it was malicious. He was clearing the net, and didn’t see the puck. Interference was the right call.
I thought the most ineffective player on the Flames was probably Jankowski. He made a few poor decisions with the puck on his stick in his own zone that cost a smooth breakout or were actual giveaways. He didn't have a Frolik-like response to his benching.
Hathaway was ok for what he is, but I still think he's got a limited shelf life every time he's inserted into the lineup. He's good for a few games and then he softens up, tries to overdo things offensively and forgets what he's there to do. Dube does more with more skill.

If McAvoy doesn't hit Gaudreau, Gaudreau collects the puck and gets a 2nd ten bell scoring chance. If Gaudreau isn't twisting, maybe McAvoy gives him the Neal treatment. But it's a matter of a split second.
McAvoy doesn't chicken wing Gaudreau. It's an interference penalty, called correctly on the ice. It's not malicious, it's not predatory, it's not suspension worthy. It's hockey.
If we lose Johnny for ten games because Eric Staal slashed his hands 20 times with no call, I'm pissed. If we lose him for ten minutes because he got hit at the side of the net looking for a rebound after a breakaway, charge that to the game.
I hope Gaudreau is okay and I'm glad the spotters removed him.

He twisted around in order to throw an elbow at his head. It really isn't that bang bang. And he could have just as easily shoved Johnny away from the net. Johnny was off balance.
