The body slam after the initial hit was not a hockey play.

In other news, the Canucks are soft as #%&@

- Gudbransen probably on the bench (should be in the press box)
- Roussel is just coming back from a concussion, plus he doesn't intimidate a anyone
- Beagle is not tough

I don't think the slam was necessary but to me it looked like a stronger man taking liberties with a weaker man. I don't think there was intent to injure and more of making things uncomfortable for him as he just kind of tossed him to the ice.

I totally agree. I kinda had a chuckle cos after last game I was pissed no one hit Petterson and allow him to waltz around, and someone mentioned that it's not easy hitting him. I guess, it's not that hard neither.

Nothing he did after that could even be described as a hit
Matheson hit him, had him pinned against the boards, and finished the hit by shoving him one-handed to the ice.

Here's what it ultimately comes down to for me - When you see a hit from behind, or a hit to the head, or a high cross-check, you're immediately up in arms even if the recipient gets up completely uninjured, because you recognize the danger in the hit itself.

If Petterson bounces up, no one bats an eye, IMO. Heck, I'm betting many Canucks fans pass around the highlight and laud him for being able to handle NHL-level physicality. But because Petterson has no ability to absorb a hard fall, and unfortunately landed on his shoulder and/or head, the result has everyone retroactively deeming the hit dirty.

Edit: And before you ask, if it's Johnny, no, I don't like it, but because I see it as an opponent taking liberties with a skilled player, and I call for the Flames to respond in kind. I don't call for a suspension.

Yeah I’m torn about this play, end result is bad, and visually it doesn’t look great....but I’m not sure it’s much more than a much bigger and stronger player finishing his check.

It’s not he intentionally targeted the head or anything either, kinda unfortunate that Pettersson’s head hit the ice with the way he landed.

I feel like this play probably happens quite a bit but it’s usually two guys closer in size and if Pettersson bounces back up we probably don’t look twice at it.

Yup, text book roughing call. Nothing more. Sure, a hard follow through on the check for emphasis, but the calling it a body slam is hyperbole.

He pins him and uses his stick for leverage and then used his full body weight to slam him.

I do agree with it being two minutes though. I suspect he gets fined because it was missed and because it led to an injury.

I don't get why so many comparisons to Johnny and what if it would have been him who took that hit.

Had it been Gaudreau it wouldn't have gone down like that, he's older, and even though their weight is similar he's way stronger.

To me it just looks like what happens when a 176 lb 19 year old boy goes into the corner with a 194 lb 24 year old man, with man strength.

Usually good things don’t happen in these situations when physicality is involved.

A minor penalty for roughing/holding... sure, but it’s the mismatch in size/strength that causes the damage.

Not a hockey play. Peterson is a rising star. The league should throw the book at Matheson. A pity no canuck would stand up for their star.

Hockey play in my mind. Kid loses his skates in the middle of a defenceman rubbing him out. He needs to be stronger in general and certainly stronger on his skates. This a men’s league, Petterson has all the skill in the works but needs to add a lot of strength to survive against nhl dmen.

I thought it was simply a case of a man against a boy, and the boy got into a bad spot.

It wasn't dirty but it was violent.

When I saw just how slight Pettersson is, my first thought was that he is way to weak to play in the NHL. And I didn't want to say it out loud but I figured injury was just waiting for him. Here we are.

And it isn't going to get any easier for him. Especially being on a team where he is going to garner attention from the opposing teams.

Man I’m really surprised how many people are okay with this. I thought it was absolute garbage. No reason to do that whatsoever. None. I hope it’s anti-Canuck bias and not what people actually think.

It’s far from the worst thing I’ve ever seen but I think that’s worth a game or two. It wasn’t necessary to throw him down like that. It accomplished nothing but hurting someone. The battle was long over at that point.

Just a player being physical. I want fighting and headshots out of the game, but you should be allowed to shove a guy on his *ss.

Cry me a river . Its not an uncommon thing after a hit. Simply reinforces people's out cry for the double standard for star players vs non star players. This is not a new thing it happens all the time. The league shouldnt look at this hit at all. When you start mixing kids with men yhe kids typically dont end up on the best side of physical plays.
