What a poorly executed troll. You don't even know the difference between serial and mass murder.

As I indicated in my last post that the media were apparently just being deliberately misleading to get their internet clicks, here is a story about the reality of what is happening:
“At this point it’s too early to consider a discharge of any kind,” Fay said. “Matthew’s still very early in his treatment and this would not be the appropriate time to apply for that.”
http://calgaryherald.com/news/crime/...alth-treatment
The privileges he has received so far have included getting access to the internet and being allowed into a fenced exercise yard. He will likely get more similar 'freedoms' as a result of this review.
It's completely shameful other outlets published stories making it seem like release to the community was on the table.

sick or not, he killed 5 people. no way he should get freedoms so soon.

Freedoms in this case doesn't mean leaving the facility. It means things like internet or TV privileges or time spent outside in a secured area.
Today will be annoying, I've already had a few people send me clickbait articles on this and acting pissed off he might get out so soon.

Not quite one year per victim, and he's on his way to living a 'normal' life. I'm more than a little surprised at how fast this process has worked out for him. He was not in control of his actions, but I assumed there would be a tighter leash, for basically the rest of his life.

Matthew de Grood, who killed five people at a house party in 2014 while in a psychotic state, will be transferred to a secure Edmonton hospital#where he can take escorted trips into the community and may even be allowed to live in a halfway house.

I hope for continued healing for all affected by this man's heinous actions.
So many devastated families. Sigh

This is a really tough one. I get that he was found not criminally responsible, and that it's best left to the professionals to determine whether or not he should be allowed in the community. But this has got to be devastating for those families. I think in their place I would be beyond outraged and feel extremely let down by the system. My thoughts are with them today.

I’m 100 percent convinced that if this kids dad wasn’t a big cop that he would of gotten 5 life sentences.

And you'd be 100% wrong. What did Vincent Li have going for him?

Vince Li killed one person and served 4 years til he was allowed for day passes. This kid killed 5 and still had the mental capacity to tel police he wouldn’t speak to them without a lawyer within 24 hours of his crime. That sounds pretty self aware to me.

He also ran at police with a knife. He was not a criminal mastermind, 9/10 times he's dead.
Also, he did talk to police. Told them a ton when he was arrested.

I'm happy that Canada has NCR. We know too much about mental health today to not have it. I'm also glad that Canada tries to rehabilitate and help the mentally ill.

I would still think even with NCR we should have some kind of minimum penalties in those cases. Maybe a certain number of years until you can be released from halfway house or similar?

You might as well just remove NCR then. Because what you’re saying that even if the court and medical professionals find someone NCR, they should be punished as if they hadn’t been

I'm not suggesting equal punishment, but some kind of minimum sentence in the alternative facilities available. ie 1 or 2 years in some sort of program or facility (halfway house) per conviction.

A penalty for having a disease? Nice.

Well I think the fact it would be mandated time in a program and not prison would be a happy medium between the people angry about total release within a few years and the system as-is.

I get that there is a certain public safety concern even for someone that has a disease. I think it's important that we are 100% sure that the individual is no longer a threat to others. However, I don't believe that minimum sentences are the best method for that assurance. Every individual and every case is unique and should be treated as such.
