Does it matter ? Zlatan Ibrahimovic is one of the best football strikers of all time. Guess what he does with his free time...

It's why that guy in Tampa got cut for being out of shape at the start of the year even though he did that on "his time".

This seems to be a growing problem for hockey. I recall a few months ago Rick Westhead reported that OHL players were advised to delete mentions of Fortnite from their social media because NHL teams considered it a major distraction and it could affect their draft chances.

Is this ban something that is actually allowed according to the CBA? Seems odd. If they can ban this what else can they ban?

I'm not that shocked. It's not just becoming an issue in hockey but everywhere. I know companies have had to let people go because they game during work hours or they spend all night gaming that it affects their work. Easy to walk away from a $15/hr operator on the floor when there are 10 others that can replace him. Much harder to walk away from a guy with unique skill set that either can't be replaced or is very hard to replace.

I think banning altogether is perhaps not the way to go, but I suspect you'll see other teams having very strict rules when it comes to gaming.

Sounds to me like a player enforced ban. Players decided its a issue and doing something about it. Honestly im shocked those here are upset about this. This coming from a Guy who enjoys playing video games.

Sk8M8 on HF had this to say about the Flames.

I know it was a big distraction with the Flames last year. There were so many nights where it would be like watching guys who hadn't slept for 24 hours before their game. I could name a few names but I'll leave it at that.

It just seems like there are a lot of worse things you can be doing than playing video games (and the NHL has a serious problem with substance abuse).

If the player is showing up for practice, working out, and fulfilling all other commitments while on the road, why does it matter what that individual chooses to do with their free time?

This oppression must not stand! Give me a break.

Sorry, no sympathy whatsoever.

I think this is a decent idea because when these guys spend excessive amounts of time on video games, they are rarely doing it all by themselves. Rather, they are doing it with a bunch of other teammates, making it an organizational problem rather than an individual who needs to be dealt with as a one-off situation. In fact, guys who may not otherwise play these games get roped in as part of a "team building" dynamic. The end result is sleepless nights or poor rest that results in poor physical performance the next day. That makes it reasonably within the purview of an organization to monitor and manage this type of behavior. At least IMO.

Maybe it's my age showing, but Fortnite is a dumb game to be playing all night. I've played it a few times and I don't really understand how I could play it more than a few rounds.

Yes, I'm sure it's much more enjoyable to fall asleep on the couch at 8PM watching Lawrence Welk reruns, right Gramps?

How do you enforce this rule with mobile gaming technology. It's easy to ban bringing along a portable Nintendo Switch but do you have to erase everything from your smartphone?
