Lazar was mainly here because Cameron vouched for him from Ottawa.
Not a surprise, nor is Kulak who Treliving is not a fan of given the contract offer. He did play 71games, so hardly a liability then or this preseason, so nice to see that others stepping have confirmed Treliving.

Quite frankly I see Bennett's regression as a Gulutzan thing, his first year under Hartley was pretty solid. He was in the doghouse so often that first year with GG I still think his psyche got destroyed. Look how Brodie looked with Gulutzan as well, people wanted to chase him off his team, yet in the preseason we see Brodano coming back.

Backlund is the only Flames which I would say benefited from GG directly. Bennett's rope is thin though, and if he doesn't progress by mid season it may be time to move on.

What?! How is 2013 the weakest draft in recent memory? It's not often opinions can be objectively wrong, but this is a case.

Did you just miss the part where the 1st overall extremely narrowly lost the Hart Trophy this year? What about a couple weeks ago where the 2nd overall was named captain of his team? How about 4th, 7th and 8th overalls leading their team in time-on-ice this past season? The third overall is a top line player on his team. And then of course the 6th overall has more goals than anyone in the 2012 class. With the 10th overall coming back from overseas, it's possible that all 10 of the first 10 picks end up being 'core' type players for the teams they are on.

The top 35 players all played in the NHL in some capacity, filed not just with depth players like Lazar, but Wennberg, Horvat, Theodore, etc.

Admittedly it's missing some of those late round gems, but there's the occasional Juuse Saros.

Did you get it confused with 2014 draft? Where the 2nd hasn't lived up to expectations yet, (arguably neither had the 1st after a great debut)? Where the 4, 5, 6 and 7th are trying not be labeled as busts?

Or the 2012 draft? The 1st and 4th overalls are out of the league. The third overall is probably starting on the third defensive pairing...

I don't think eat bread is quite ready. But hes waiver exempt I believe so it's an easy assignment.

Dube is and im glad he's getting rewarded. Coach seems to like Hathaway so that's fine but I think he should be the guy subbing in and not a regular starter.

Will be really pleasantly surprised if this means valimaki and Andersson are filling out the 6 and 7 spots.

One of those trades that worked for both sides.

Baertschi got more opportunity due to being on a weaker team and has developed into a top 6 forward. Probably doesn't happen as a Flame.

Andersson looks to be a steal of a pick and should have many years ahead of being a very solid player.

Well Baertschi's only a top 6 on a weak, terrible team. And he's near unusable in the bottom 6. He found his niche, good for him.

He's actually first line (lol) on a weak team. I'd say he probably is a top 6 guy most places though

He got extremely favourable line combinations playing with Horvat and Boesser including ample time on the PP and he still underwhelmed. Which playoff teams does he make the top 6?

Who is now most likely going to get 4th line minutes.

We may never see the Bennett that we always wanted to see. I sure hope we do, but the outlook looks pretty bad.

To be honest I'd love to see Andersson/Valimaki as the third pairing. I don't mind Stone and I'm hanging on this thought that there is a chance in the summer that when his brother goes UFA that maybe we can convince Michael to come here if we have Mark. I know its low odds, but it still like thinking it!

It would be a stretch to say BT wins the majority of his trades, he wins some and on some he misses.

Yep. Shedding Russell, a pending UFA, for a draft pick and parts at the deadline was not exactly ground breaking. Credit where it’s due to BT and the organization for using the pick on Dube.

Just going through some notable picks swapped to or from under Treliving:

Hamonic: Gave up 2018 1st (Noah Dobson), 2nd (Ruslan Iskhakov), & 2nd in 2019 or 2020. Got 4th in 2019 or 2020. Obviously too early to tell.

Mike Smith: Gave up 2018 3rd (Ty Emberson) along with Hickey and Johnson. Too early to tell.

Lazar: Gave up 2017 2nd (Formenton) and Jokipakka. Not looking good.

Stone: 2018 5th (Akira Schmid) and 2017 3rd (Stuart Skinner). 2 goalies, neither seems on track for much, but I guess you never know with goalies.

Elliott: 2016 2nd (Jordan Kyrou) and 2018 3rd (Niklas Nordgren). Kyrou looks like he could be a player, and Elliott was not the goalie the Flames needed. Loss most likely

Russell (out): 2016 2nd (Dube), plus Jokipakka and Pollock. Looking like a big win.

Hudler (out): 2016 2nd (Parsons) and 2018 4th (Demetrios Koumontzis). Parsons makes this a clear win, as Hudler was done.

Reinhart (out) conditional 2016 4th, but I believe conditions weren't met. So technically a loss, but not much in it.

Hamilton: 2015 1st (Zachary Senyshyn) and 2 2nds (Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson and Jeremy Lauzon). Senyshyn didn't finish out his junior career blazing, and had and ok but not great first year in the AHL. JFK could be a player. Don't know much about Lauzon, but seems to be a clear win for Calgary.

Baertschi (out): 2015 2nd (Andersson). Andersson hasn't made the NHL yet, but Magic 8 Ball predicts this will turn out to be a win for Calgary in the end.

Glenncross (out): 2015 2nd (used to acquire Dougie) and 3rd(flipped with another 2105 3rd for a 2015 2nd used to take Kylington). Scoreface was done. Clear win.

I doubt it. Pretty much every team has a Kulak type fringe 6/7 defenseman. No one will pick him up to keep him on their NHL roster all season.

Gillies being waiver exempt unfortunately doesn’t work in his favor as he seemed to have a better preseason than Rittich. Not by a huge margin but definitely better.

Hey! We kept Kulak on the NHL roster all season! And also, there's nothing saying we won't keep him on the roster again this year...

I know it's not your intention, but with Hamilton especially I see the problem being the actual selections that it becomes pretty moot.

First Bruins had three picks in a row, so it didn't really matter which one of DeBrusk, Zboril or Senyshyn went in what order. But the bigger issue is that Barzal was sill on the table. He was listed at anywhere from 5-15 but probably a median of around 9th overall. If he's still available and the Flames didn't trade Hamilton, who's to say he's not selected instead by Treliving? Kyle Connor as well. Just because the Bruins made some odd choices that may not pan out doesn't mean the Flames would have done the same.

I think it's a little bit more fair comparing trades where the Flames selected the draft pick because it was at least up to them. But even then, if Treliving went off his meds and traded Monahan for a 4th round pick today, he would be fired that day, regardless of whether that 4th round pick ended up being another Gaudreau.

Name a team, other than Van or Ottawa, where Baertschi is one of the 2 best LWs.
