I dont think other teams value Nurse nearly as much as the Oilers do and further, McLellan and Chiarelli's asses are on the hot seat.
If the Oilers miss the playoffs this season (which they most certainly will) then both of those guys are gone.
Which in its own way would be a shame, they're doing such an excellent job of losing.
The Oilers are going to be interesting, for the season overall they've got a sweetheart schedule with the exception of their opening 20 games or so.
So if they blow it out of the gates then the rest of their schedule hardly matters.

Agreed that an offer sheet for Nurse is unlikely. On most teams he is a 4/5 guy, not a lock on the first pairing. On the Oilers he's a $4.5M d-man, but anywhere else? Not so much.
On the Flames, for example, he's a 3rd pairing guy. Would we really want to offer sheet him at $4m or so to play on our 3rd pairing, with maybe occasional spot duty on the 2nd pair? Most other teams probably feel that was as well.
There is only one team that pays 3rd pairing guys like first pairing guys - and that's the Oil, who are no good.

I dont even think he'd make the Flames.
Gio, Brodie, Hamonic, Hanifin, Stone....so okay yeah, he might be #6 which is $3M or less.

If I were Nurse's agent I'd advise him to sign for one year only, and publicly demand a trade out of that hell hole. The mess they've created is only going to get worse over time, which is hilarious.

How much cap space gets freed up (if any - not sure of the rules) from placing Sekera on the long term injury reserve list- and when can they do it? Is that what they are waiting for?

From CapFriendly:
The Training-Camp Equation
The training camp equation can be used on the last day of training camp in preparation for the first day of the season:
ACSL = Team cap hit - LTIR player’s cap hit
Example: The 2017-18 upper limit is $75M, on the last day of the off-season a team has a projected cap hit of $78M and places a player with an AAV of $3.5M on LTIR:
Team cap hit = $78M
Player’s cap hit = $3.5M
ACSL = $78M - $3.5M = $74.5M
To accrue cap space while the team continues to use LTIR, they would need to trade players to get below a projected cap hit value of $74.5M.

This is where a Nurse hold gets interesting. You don't just add 5.5M for Sekera to the 79.5 cap to give them 85M. The Oilers will have a cap hit close to 4M under the cap. Even with signing a PTO guy, maybe that gets to 3M of space. In that scenario they only get 2.5M added for LTIR for Sekera (if Sekera was gone the whole year, which he won't be). It was the whole reason Grossman was signed to leverage as much as they could from Smid's 3.5M.
The capologist up north will probably be having some long nights trying to put together presentations that management up there will understand.

I would slot him ahead of Stone for sure and possibly Hamonic.
In a non-no-good environment I think he would thrive.

Ahead of Stone for sure. But not Hamonic yet, IMO.

Agreed. I think Hamonic’s peak performance is what Nurse’s highest potential is. A strong defensive game chipping in 30-35 points.

In case you forgot, the Oilers powerplay was abysmally bad last year. It should be better this season, because "reasons"...

And of course, what is Oilers prognostication without an obligatory nod to the past?

Look, I understand that if I come read this thread I shouldn't expect much beyond trashing the Oilers, but posts like this really distract from the purpose of this thread, so can we please try to keep things on track.
With that in mind, I'll say that I for one, actually quite like the new thread title.

Pretty sure, based on the first dozen or so pages in this thread, the entire purpose of this thread is endlessly debating and/or complaining about the thread title, with particular attention paid to whether or not asterisks or dots are needed or more appropriate.

Pretty amazing how Coiler fans assume Dr. Drai/Neon Leon will be more productive away from McDavid, with linemates like Lucic, and Reider, or Puljujarvi.
That'd be like Flames fans saying: "Monahan will be so much better off now that he has Frolik on his wing, Gaudreau was really holding him back."
That prediction is as no good as the Oilers themselves.

But you quoted a post that has literally nothing to do with thread titles etc, and said "posts like this (one I've quoted) really distract from the purpose of this thread" when the post you quoted is the exact purpose of this thread

Distract from the purpose? Umm... it might be the best and most on topic post yet in this new thread.
