One thing I am curious about; how much of the money goes towards advertising? Because this is the one charity where the more advertising it does; the better; meaning more awareness helps prevent drunk driving.

+1 Ken. I think that the whole point of MADD is public awareness first, victims services second. When I lost a good friend to drunk driving neither his friends or family thought of going to MADD for councilling, but we all gave some money for the public awareness campaign.

So, 19 cents on the dollar goes to victim services, and 43 cents go to education and awareness.
62 cents on the dollar is a hell of a lot better than 19 cents... a little misleading there, eh?

Though 62 cents still seems a little low.

“Candy Lightner, MADD’s founder, says she disassociated herself from the movement in 1985 because she believed the organization was headed in the wrong direction. ‘It has become far more neo-prohibitionist than I had ever wanted or envisioned,’ said Mrs. Lightner, who founded MADD after her daughter was killed by a drunk driver. ‘I didn’t start MADD to deal with alcohol. I started MADD to deal with the issue of drunk driving.’”

Tough to say. I wonder what the "industry average" is for not for profits?

I also wonder if you can direct your donations to MADD so that any of the money you donate goes specifically to programs.

I used to work for the Missing Children’s Society of Canada and 8 cents out of every dollar went to administrative costs and the rest went directly to the charity. We had to make a certain amount of money each night when we went out to canvas or we would lose the job. (Yes we got paid; I think it was around $10/h, and this was about 6 years ago) |
