so that's 7 2013 1st rounders that have at least at some point been a part of the Flames within 5 years after the draft. That's got to be some kind of record.

Seems like a good trade. Small gains add up!

Both are fringe NHLers and unsigned RFAs. I like the trade and would rather have Rychel than Shinkaruk, but it's hardly a huge difference.

Pretty good chance that this is related to difficulties in agreeing to contracts with their current teams. Shinkaruk likely wants a fresh start somewhere he has a good chance of getting call-ups and Rychel may be more interested in Calgary/Stockton than Montreal/Laval. The Monahan connection AC pointed out may also be a draw.

Unlikely Rychel will ever be a full-time NHL player but I prefer him over Shinkaruk.

Yea, I know who Shinkaruk is. I meant that I've never heard of Rychel.

Why does MTL make this trade?

I guess they either a) don't value Rychel b) see more upside in Shinkaruk

Rychel seems like a guy that has actually produced in a 4th line role at the NHL level though...14 points in 41 NHL games isn’t terrible.

More versatile than Shinkaruk IMO too.

Seems weird for Montreal though...Rychel was great for their AHL team after they traded for him and had 2 points in 4 games at the NHL level for them.

For a team lacking forward depth in Montreal it seems like a weird move for them.

Yep, that's kind of what I'm saying too. I don't really understand this move from MTL perspective.

Possibly both organizations don't see a lot of upside in either of the players so they're just taking a chance on a change of scenery.

He'd be a better for on the 4th line than any other LW we have.

Potentially a pretty gritty LW lineup after Johnny

Gaudreau
Tkachuk
Bennett
Rychel

Won't be getting walked on much. Added bonus of being a close friend to the Monahan clan.

Time to take a quick peak at the Habs fans reaction on HFboards. Should be good for a laugh

Most likely waiver fodder for waiver fodder trade.

Will Kerby bring some sandpaper to Stockton?

Sometimes you can find a diamond in the rough, and I think both teams are hoping that's the case.

Of course "Bob's Yer Uncle" is Monahan's uncle.

Lindholm to Monahan,
Across to Gaudreau at the circle, who spins
Back to Monahan
He scores!

And Bob's yer uncle.

Because that organization is infatuated with undersized forwards.

this is like when that guy started with a paper clip and kept trading it until it turned into a house. in a couple of seasons we are going to end up with McDavid or MacKinnon from the Granlund pick.
Also keeps the legacy of Tom alive through Rychel!
