Seems like a pessimistic thread but I would say that the biggest missing piece right now is a long-term #1, so any major trade would likely be around going and getting that.

Flames send off the 2019 or 2020 1st rounder for a goalie.

I think we will see gio traded to a contender at the deadline for a kings ransom. Not trying to be pessimistic just trying to get some chatter going

#1 what?
Goalie?
Center?
Defenseman?
Coach?
Fan?
Waterboy?
Just looking for some clarification.

Itll be something big including either Bennett and/or Janko plus maybe another roster player or pick for a goalie and a prospect

Maybe you're not "trying", but you have proposed a pessimistic premise. That's going to generate pessimistic chatter.
To me it's more interesting to ask, "If the Flames lead their division at the trade deadline who might they target?"
To each their own.

Next big trade? Probably after the failure of this roster and the Gios get traded for futures.
Anything else is just tinkering before then. Unless of course a vasilevsky becomes magically available.

Big trade: acquisition or subtraction of a core piece via trade
Potential additions:
- number 1 centre
- number 1 goalie
- number 2 defenseman
- a great RH shot
Potential removals:
- Giordano (age)
- Brodie or Hanifin (due to emergence of valimaki, Andersson, kylington)
- Lindholm (for a better RH shot)

I can see us targeting a high end winger at the deadline if we are leading the division at the deadline

Some fans have no patience at all. You want to trade away another 1st for a position we have filled in the near future? We just need a stop gap for at most two more years until Parsons is ready. I could care less about his numbers during an injury plagued season last year, everything points to him becoming a legit #1 goalie.

4 likley outcomes for 2018-19
1)The Flames have a break out season like the Jets.
2)The Flames make the playoff and at minimum have a competitive first round series (think 2017-18 Avs where they gave Nashville a bit of scare.
3) the Flames sneak into the playoffs and are easily eliminated in the first round
4) Flames miss the playoffs
Next year .. no matter what the Flames do this year, there will be 3 29 year old D-men that will be starting their last year before they become UFA's.
If Brodie and Hamonic do anywhere as good as is expected i2018-19 to meet scenario 1/2 they will be looking for one last big contract. Tkachuck will be looking at more than 6M x6. There will be pressure to pick one to pay big $ or maybe hang on until the 2020 trade deadline.
If it is 3) there will be a hard look at what value the Flames can get for Neal / Backlund / Gio Old high paid guys that didn't carry the team to the next level and are getting older.
4) Fire sale ....

The OP asked for a prediction. I gave one.
Also, if you haven't noticed, our GM has been kicking tires on goalies. The Flames have a 36 year old starter under contract for this season and nothing more. They have 2 unproven backups that may or may not be ready in a year to take a starting role. Parsons may never be ready for all we know right now.You willing to stand pat on that hope?
The team is ready to contend now with a young core all around the same age.
Its not all that outlandish.

Yes. I have seen him play enough to be absolutely certain he is a can't miss prospect. While you can never have too much goaltending trading away another 1st rnd pick for one would be asinine.

After Juuso Välimäki, Oliver Kylington, and Rasmus Andersson all have a great showing at camp, Toronto boy Mark Giordano is traded for Calgary boy William Nylander.

As much as I agree with this evaluation, in my opinion the Flames have 3 full seasons which they will need a starting goalie post-Smith pre-Parsons.

No, London Knights season ticket holder. I could care less what he showed in an injury plagued season, he has been a big game player his whole career who has all the tools to be great. There is a reason pro scouts call him Jonathan Quick Jr.
