Really doesn't surprise me with kicking the ties on some players. Remember that the Hamonic trade was a couple years in the making.

Goalies are up and down year to year, but if you have a good one, they do not begin to decline after 27. They're not running backs.
|
None of the articles suggested that a goalies career is done by 27. Obviously a star goalie who is putting up numbers which aren't as good as his previous years could still be the best goalie in the league.
What the article does suggest is that by 27 a goalie is done developing. That is, if a goalie does not prove that they are good enough before then, it is very rare that they will be given any more opportunities.
FWIW here is a few of those articles.

Taking a while to get to 5000

The older goalies still active in the league have clearly shown they can still put up the numbers and make the saves but they have also shown that some are more susceptible to injury as they get older and their bodies start to breakdown.
Again, another reason why Treliving is looking at young guys who appear ready to take over as starters.

In addition to what I had already said, yeah that stands to reason.
Just don't get the want to attach yourself to Price who not only has had trouble staying healthy but you'd be paying him for 10 years with a salary that is primarily bonus money you can't get out from.

Oh man, we disagree largely then. I'd be absolutely ecstatic to get the best goalie in the NHL at $5mil a year, even at that term.

So would I… but I'm not paying that kind of money plus acquisition cost just to get someone who used to be the best goalie in the NHL. At some point during that contract, possibly early on, Price is not going to be the best anymore.

So, is he looking for another established starter? A younger guy on the cusp of being a starter? Shopping for a goalie basically says to me that he doesn't think the to two guys he signed are anywhere near cutting it. Why sign them? Why gut your forward/defence depth unless your internal solutions are not viable in any way.
At some point you have to let Rittich & Gillies sink or swim. If that point was last Mar/Apr and you have determined they were NG, again, why sign them?
If there really was a goalie move to be made it would have been done by now.
Want to really shake up your goaltending and see what you've got - replace the goalie coach! (remind me again of which of the 6-9 goalies' games improved due to Sigalet ? Has he helped turn any non-established goalie into a starter? This is where the disconnect is.)

And there are plenty of examples of young goalies starting out great, then declining quite early (Toskala, Jim Carrey, Raycroft).
IMO predicting a goalie's career is like trying to predict how they will do as a prospect; it really is a crapshoot more so then any other position. Plenty of goalies play well into their late 30s (Brodeur, Roloson, Hasek). Plenty faulter. Even Jonas Hiller had a stellar first season here, then crapped out season 2. Now he's out of the league.
You just simply can't expect a goalie to follow a trajectory like you can most other players. They are all over the place, and have been throughout history.

I agree, the problem with any quantitative analysis of goalies is that the sample size is very small. Still, I like reading this analysis, especially in the middle of hockeyless august.

Two rentals? Man, that's hard to gauge value. But if they were signed long-term, Columbus would want Gaudreau and Hanifin or a similar package.

What's going on there? And is Reimer an option for the Flames? Stone or Frolik would have to go to make it money work but Reimer seems like a decent option.
|
Simple. Luongo is old. When he was injured last year Reimer was the starter, and he did ok. The next option was Hari Sateri...not good. They have a young middling goalie prospect in Montembault, but last year was his first as a pro.
There are NO other goalies signed to contracts for the Panthers.
Hutchinson was signed as an insurance policy for a 39 year old Luongo still playing a bulk of the games. Should he falter, it'll be up to Reimer and Hutchinson to carry the load.
There is zero chance of prying either of those players out of Florida at the moment.

One is Mason, one is Rittich.
Mason does not have a history of being "dependable", so I'm not sure why we would even bother bringing him in at this stage. Rittich is just as good, and there are no clear evidence that would show Mason is a better option.
|
Yes, he had a bad year last year, which is why he would be cheap. Then you get the chance to see if you have that .906 goalie from last year, or the guy who went .917/.928/.918 in his first three years in Philadelphia. He at least has some history of being able to be a starting quality goalie, and he's only 30. I think it's worth a shot, if you want to go low risk. I can't imagine he's asking for a lot of money and, again, it costs you nothing in trade.

Remember we're talking about the franchise that paid Vegas Rielly Smith to take Marchessault and literally left Gallant on the curb. I'd say there's a chance.

Jesus, Tre acting up again with his quest for a #1 goalie. Never ends... Just build a frickin team that doesn't suck in front of a goalie already.

I would LOVE to get Price in here, but to take on that contract it would have to be either salary retained or at a decent trade price.
Montreal fans would burn down the Bell Center if he isn't traded for a Kings ransom, so for that reason alone I doubt he goes anywhere anytime soon. Tabernac, if Montreal lost another tendy to a team who went out and won a cup with him they would quite literally riot.

Is that what is happening? Is Alex Singleton running practice drills for Flames goalies and scaring the ever-living #### out of them?
It all makes sense now.

Yes. What a jerk he is for investigating every possible option for upgrading the team now and into the future.
