Default Aleksander Barkov got a 46 675€ speeding ticket in Finland

Aleksander Barkov has been found guilty for endangering of traffic safety (in Finland). He drove 105 km/h in an area where the speed limit is 60 km/h back in the summer of 2017. He is punished with 25 unit fines (for total amount of 46 675€) (article in finnish)

Tickets in Finland are based on income.

Remind me not to speed in Finland. Ha ha. Glad they don’t have the same law in North America!

Does everyone in Finland know everyone else's salary?

i mean is the government looking at tax returns or something?

Well, it is the government. They can look at tax returns if they want.

Yes. Its an interesting system where infractions are levied at a percentage of one's income as opposed to a set rate per infraction.

Underrated speed

Seriously though, fines being a % of income sounds like a great way to add consequence to the rich. Imagine the revenue raising potential for NY, CA, FL, etc. off the trust fund brigade in the US!

Not meaning to derail or offend anyone's political leanings, but Scandanavian countries tend to do a lot of things in a progressive way. Most of the world could learn a thing or two.

If you think socialist is progressive then sure.

If you see speeding tickets as a deterrent for people speeding, rather than as just some expense, then it makes a certain amount of sense to tie it to income. Someone making minimum wage might balk at a $100 fine, where the 1% will laugh it off and keep speeding. Equal tickets almost makes it seem like speeding is ok, as long as you can afford it.

For Locke's example, for sure, a minimum needs to be set and it won't ever be perfect, but without putting a whole lot of time and research into it, I'm onboard with the idea of speeding tickets tied to income.

Throwing around terms like "progressive" and "socialist" just cloud the issue. They have their own inherent set of biases and opinions attached to them that will get dragged into this and aren't necessarily relevant.

Don't need to qualify like that on a message board as it goes without saying, but in this case the opinion is not mine alone.

Sounds awful.
