Yeesh. They don't write stories much better than that.

No pressure on the kids... probably unfair on my part to suggest it. Legacies are hard to live up to.

Jarome Iginla seems more like the hockey dad who wants to give his kids opportunities, but still have fun.

Had to record it and watch when we got home from work.
Repeating myself but Iggy was the main reason we invested in ST back in 2002. He was such a special all around player that I had to see his career up close.

I bet so many of all of you like myself just smile and beamed with pride the whole time watching his retirement. Reliving our own personal memories through the speeches.

How impressive was Iggy being reminiscent and downplaying about his roles on the 2002 and 2010 Gold medals. He was absolutely one of the key catalyst's and stat leaders in both of those tournaments and especially the Gold medal game itself.
This is how much class Iggy has he even thanked the enforcers he played with, nobody of his stature takes the grace and time to extend that appreciation to that depth of their past team mates. Iggy didn't even take the credit that the reality was he was his own policeman and he often was an enforcer for others.
Iginla there is no doubt in my mind would have been the legend he was in any era of hockey.

Anyone else notice when King said him and Sutter were hanging out on King's deck? I wonder if they have mended fences.

Brian Sutter was on 960 last week i think, and when asked if Darryl is done coaching, he said probably (or something like that), but he said that Darryl wanted the coaching job in Calgary that was given to Peters. That he would have loved to coach an Alberta team again (going off memory).

Fact that Darryl was a hard-ass when it came to hockey but a soft-ass (ya i said that) when it came to the players off the ice (if they were honest/hard working etc), tells me Darryl wouldn't hold a grudge over King firing him. King was distraught and said he cried when he fired Darryl, so he is a DS fan no doubt.

There was never an issue between those guys, during or after Sutter’s tenure. Sutter’s detractor was higher up the chain, and when a slick talking weasel then got in the mix on the side of that guy, Sutter didn’t have a chance and King didn’t have the power to overrule either.

Expected nothing less from Iginla. Pure class all the way today,just as he played and carried himself on and off the ice. Best Flame of all time, not even close. Size, speed, skill, finesse,hard as a rock.

Hopefully a jersey retirement announcement soon.

Obscure Iginla moments of mine:
On one of the many contentious trips to Edmonton myself and buddies took, in early 2000s,

him with a hat trick to seal a win was my happiest moment as a Flames fan at the time for a live out of town game, and worth the usual body fluids that got directed at Flames fans directions at Skyreach/Rectal.

Then also the year he got 51, and his last goal that year was the empty netter to officially eliminate the Oilers from the playoffs the last game of the year, which was another great moment.

Saw him first in person in fall of 1996. Him and Gagner and Tabaracci came into the Fox on 11th downtown a few Saturdays over a few month period. Women flocked to him, obviously.

Fact is Darryl deserved to get fired as GM...it was a tough call because of all he had done for the franchise as coach.

His last year and a half or so on the job as GM was ridiculously bad

Iggy's PC really brought a smile to my face.

Gotta be one of the most charming, personable players i've ever had the pleasure of listening too...Guy just lights up a room.

Hope he decides to pursue a career in a management role somewhere; Iggy is a guy the NHL or a network would want in front of the camera imo

Wow! Thanks a ton to all the CP members for posting all the links.

Very nostalgic to hear the stories and relive some of those incredible memories. Makes me proud to own a 2002 Team Canada red 3rd jersey with Iginla on the back.

Also proud to own the Heritage Classic Iginla jersey after seeing Jarome skate his then small kids around the ice.

Congratulations and really happy that Jarome retired with the Calgary Flames.

No offence to Peters but if Sutter was in fact interested, then there is no competition there.

That is unless Peters fills out the coaching potential that people in hockey appear to see in him. But if proven is what they were going for as they claimed, I don't see how Sutter doesn't check all the boxes. I guess, alike the decision to go with Jagr over Iggy, the organization just wants to go in a new direction.

Hate to say it but I think NHL managers may think that Sutter is past his prime. LA letting him go was telling after all he did for that franchise. I'm not 100% sold on Peters but I'm more comfortable with him than Sutter. Hurts me to say that.

Perhaps the organization is being honest about the concept of not interfering in hockey decisions and letting the GM act. Could be to a fault, but can you really selectively complain about owners meddling?

Not the time or place for Sutter vs Peters though.

Either way, I think those of us who had the chance to watch Iggy’s career here have to count ourselves fortunate. 15th all time in league history in goals scored. The face of the franchise, skilled, gritty, tenacious, well spoken and gracious.. heart and soul.

It kind of seems silly looking back at the hand wringing when he left, with the bungling of the trade and all that nonsense. I do love the goal he scored against StL before leaving. Ultimately, the organization did right by him, and he deserved it. Perhaps sadly, I think the organization thought it was in worse shape than it was. You can debate that, but really the blowing it up was more important symbolically than in terms of the return on Iggy, Bouw, Regehr.

I hoped he got the chance to win when he left. Thought he saw Pitt as the romantic fit, then Crosby gets his face broken. Malkin had one of his horrible disappearing and selfish playoffs and I thought Iggy gave what he could.

Man, if he could pull the Flames so close with their roster, I thought how could he not get there with the Pens. (Obviously more to it than that)

He had a heck of a year in Boston. I watched a ton of B games that year. Earned the respect of the blue collar leaning fan base with a few early tussles, then potted 30 and was +34. Not to mention the return and the great gesture by Chara, making him stay out for an extra lap. He had an ok first year in Colorado but the rest of the way couldn’t fight through the hip.

Seeing how Jagr did pretty darn well here *when healthy* in his limited time, in my eyes, and made his line mates better, but knowing injuries derailed him and that Iggy too was in the cards, but likely susceptible to injuries as well, it is a touch bittersweet.

I admire how much of a gamer he was when he tussled with Engelland, and acquitted himself quite well.

That is to be admired. He gave it everything on the ice, right up to the tussle with Engelland . Same thing off the ice, the speech was humble and gave more credit to everybody that he could think of. A true gem, class act. One of a kind.

Burke said it well today. He will be missed. A lot of players aren’t.
