As an Astros fan, not happy we are acquiring a guy like this.
As for giving up Giles, that is no loss. He is just not very good.

Not quite the value you would have had on him prior to the incident but all things considered a pretty solid return. I'm not upset Osuna won't pitch another game for the Jays.
Paulino is a former top 100 prospect who was dropped from the list due to PED suspension and injuries. Perez is Houston's 10th best prospect with some great number at A and AA ball this year (although looks more like a reliever). Two intriguing arm talents.

It's interesting since the Jays maybe buying low on Houston prospects. Last year (2017 Prospect Watch) Paulino was ranked #5 of Astros prospects, and Perez #7. This year they fell to #23 and #10 respectively.
Plus Giles can be really good when he's on his game - has seasons of 2.0 War, 1.7 WAR, and 1.9 WAR. If he can get back to his prime game he could be a good reliever for this team.
If the accusations about Osuna are true (and looks like they are based on the MLB suspension) then this maybe a good move by the Jays.
It's just unfortunate they didn't move him in the offseason because he would have returned an even bigger haul then.
Honestly not a good look for the Astros organization to be trading for him too, even if he is a potential elite talent who is only 23.

FYP.
Giles is a good pitcher. Bring him in, get him to rein in his emotions a bit and he'll delivery a solid return for us later.

Desperate people do desperate things. The #Astros lost out on Colome, Herrera, Britton and Familia so they take a big risk with Osuna. #Jays get good return considering all things: two years of control on Giles and two good arms in Paulino and Perez. Much better deal than expected

Source: #BlueJays decided earlier this season that Roberto Osuna would not pitch for them again at @MLB level following the domestic violence incident. Blue Jays ownership and management decided to make the best trade they could. This was it. @MLBNetwork

Verlander and McCullers were very outspoken when a prospect was charged with Domestic violence earlier this year...I don’t think this move is going to be looked at fondly by the Astro locker room.

This a fantastic return for a guy that has ongoing court proceedings hanging over him.
All 3 guys the Jays are getting have plus velocity and can touch the upper 90's. Giles needs to regain his confidence, because he has the stuff, just looks like he has lost the closers mojo.
After all the bats they have been adding it's nice to see some quality arms joining the organization. Hopefully Giles gets called up and helps stabilize this crappy bullpen, that is about to get worse when Clippard, Axford and possibly Loup go out the door next.

Personally I’m not a fan of dealing a guy at his lowest point. Especially when that lowest point is OFF THE FIELD in presumably a one time thing. There’s never an excuse for a guy behaving in such a way (if I were her brother I’d love to beat his nose in), but I’d still hold on and deal him when his value is higher. Court wise what’ll happen? It’s the Canadian system, he’ll plea guilty and be on probation with some arrangement to prevent being flagged at the border. Under Anthopolous he’d never sell a guy at his lowest point when he’s young and performing on the field. Maybe he was a distraction in the dressing room ...we’ll meve know but I really don’t like dealing from a position of weakness when you have the option to hold out until it gets sorted. Now that this has happened, the older guys who have no future going forward should be dealt for any value they can get back for the jays to perform in the future.

Given the asset they gave up is toxic, that's probably the best decision they could have made. If one of those guys finds the form that had them listed as top ten prospects last year, then we've done well.

Couldn’t disagree more
The entire thing sucks but trying to extract value shouldn’t be more important than saying we don’t want someone like this on our team
i also think based on what we know about abuse that assuming it was a one time thing is being naive
In short...f him

No doubt, I say f him as well, but it's hard to pin the complete guilty stick on him when details haven't come out (that I know of). There's the image and character of the club they want to preserve, and with a young talent like Osuna you don't want to give him away for a lesser return to prove a point. There's still a team to run, and getting solid value in return on a team where tradable value is lacking, is concerning. Hypothetical, but Alex Anthopolous would find a way to get max value.

How about the rest of the deals where the prospects didn't transpire? Syndergaard was their 3rd ranked pitching prospect at the time.

In deals that also didn't make the Jays better?
I'm not trying to trash AA I'll just never understand why people have him on a pedestal or act like he was this amazing GM. Made plenty of so/so moves.

He had a plan. The plan in hindsight was to deal guys who had no future with the club, get draft picks and solid prospects, see who pans out, promote them to the club, then deal others at the right time for bonafide stars the year the Jays went for it. Some of those deals, as you mentioned, didn't go well, but that one that you pointed out was the one in hindsight they'd take back. However, almost all the others, at the time, were solid deals which had the Jays even then winning all. He did leave the cupboards bare, but even Norris dealt to the Tigers didn't amount to much. AA deserved a ton of credit for rebuilding and going for it at the right moment.
This isn't to poop on Atkins and Shapiro yet, because they've made a lot of smaller signings and deals that have worked out. However, I've yet to see them acquire those blue chip prospects. Seems like they're working with a lot of mediocrity and not going to the direction of a rebuild but rather a retool, without fully committing. It's just a lot of neither here nor there and I'm scratching my head as to what direction it's going to go. Am I the only one who can't read what's going on?

The Donaldson move is retroactive and just to free up another spot. He's still expected to come back soon.
